It’s #NationalMascotDay and I think today is an excellent day to share with you a very special mascot, one that was revealed to the public for the first time back on May 4th, and has been a hit with the fans. Everyone, this is Rush the Raccoon, official mascot of the WFA’s Boston Renegades!
After having Cyan as a stand-in mascot for five seasons, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023, we are excited to have Rush as an official mascot for the 5-time WFA Champions!
The idea of Rush began in 2018, the same year I began performing as Cyan at Renegades Home games. The idea was to have Cyan as the unofficial team mascot until the Renegades had an official one of their own. Because the Renegades organization didn’t have the funding for a mascot of their own at the time, Cyan was a fill-in.
Last fall, the Renegades organization finally had the budget to bring Rush to life. We made a deal with a local mascot maker, Roh, to put it together. Rush was completed at the end of March. A week after her completion, me and the Renegades’ owner, Molly Goodwin got to see the Rush costume. Roh did an amazing job making it. We are incredibly happy with how it came out.
Rush has been a hit with the fans and the team since her debut on May 4th. Lots of fans wanted to take pictures with her. Kids couldn’t get enough of her. There was a countless number of fistbumps and hi-fives. The big goal and reward, however, was simply bringing joy to these fans at these games. Those are the kinds of victories that can be added to the victories the Renegades make on the field.
I’ve been following women’s football in Boston since 2010, back when there was the Boston Militia of the IWFL, who moved to the WFA a year later in 2011. The team was owned by local car dealership owner, Ernie Boch Jr. The team was replaced by the Boston Renegades after the 2014 season ended. The Renegades began play in 2015 and had won 5 league championships! In addition to their 5 championships, they had a report of the team on NBC’s Today Show and a movie documentary titled “Born To Play”!
The Renegades organization has been an outstanding success. To be part of this great organization is a very big honor and I look forward to witnessing the Renegades accomplish more success.
The Renegades have a Home playoff game at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere, MA on Saturday, June 29th. Rush will be there and I would be really excited to have fans meet her there. If you can make it, I hope to introduce you to the Renegades’ new, and now, official mascot, Rush!
