Chapter 1- Rising Aspirations
Zephyr had been going to college for about two years. The slightly chubby dragonite had been yearning for something new to do. Going for a standard business degree left his motivation for his current job at a grocery store dead in the water. Not only was it getting monotonous, but his lack of motivation was starting to cause him to hate the job. With his coworkers being near brain dead with how they acted when the boss wasn’t looking, he just couldn’t take it anymore. Stomping into the small office, he tried to be respectful as he put his two weeks in, but his boss didn’t take it as such and fired him on the spot. Zephyr couldn’t help but feel a hyper beam burbling in his throat, but he took the hint and left, tossing his apron down on the ground. He never wanted to see an apron again.
After taking a few days to cool off, Zephyr realized what he had just done. He groaned as he stuck his head in his paws, the dragonite munching on his chips as he had begun stress eating again.
“You know, I don’t know why you took that job to begin with.” A young yet muscular feraligatr said nearby on a seperate bed in the cramped dorm. Zephyr sighed as he looked at his brother, Sebastian.
“Hey, money’s money, there’s barely any jobs out there that are looking for someone like me! Not part time anyhow.”
“You’re in the baking club, right?”
“Yeah, what of it?” Sebastian didn’t waste anymore time and started fishing under his bed. After throwing out practically everything from dumbbells to a knock-off board game, he finally pulled out a slightly crumpled flier and handed it to Zephyr. When he uncrumpled it, he saw the fattest orca he had ever seen, causing him to blush a tad before he read the text.
“Have you ever wanted to show your tasty treats to the world, but didn’t have enough time to do it? We’re opening for part times positions at ‘The Rising Yeast’ and we’d be more than happy to welcome you in! Interviews begin at…” Zephyr started to lose focus as he read all the details, but Sebastian couldn’t help but smile as he saw Zephyr’s tail wag as he read. Zephyr finally stopped reading before setting the flier aside and hugging his brother in one of the tightest hugs he had ever given before.
“Thank you! Thank you so much Seb!” Sebastian couldn’t help but smile as he hugged back.
“Hey, they were giving them out at the college, so I didn’t want you to feel left out.” What was once a dragonite who was about to just throw the towel in and give up turned into a near child-like excitement as Zephyr sat back in his bed. So many opportunities raced through his head as a few recipes were already starting to pop up within his head. He could hear his stomach gurgle with excitement as well, which he happily quelled with the near empty bag of chips in his hand. When he finally reached the end of the bag, he immediately sprung up and got to work in the kitchen, throwing the bag into the nearby trash can.
What followed was a frenzy from the dragonite as he made quite a mess of the kitchen making pastry after pastry. The feraligatr couldn’t help but sneak a few while the dragonite wasn’t looking, but the pleased bellows he emitted got him caught red handed. Hours upon hours passed, and he had made enough to supply a small bakery for a day. Zephyr breathed heavily, impressed with how he was able to cook for that long and not lose any sense of motivation as he did it. However, as he looked upon all of the food he had just made, he couldn’t help but gulp nervously. He had made way too much for two people, let alone one. He felt a nervousness creeping up his spine as he stared, the food seemingly getting larger in his eyes as the true weight of them crept in. As his muscle memory began to activate, he dove in to a croissant and bit down.
Utter deliciousness filled his taste buds. He felt his body shudder with bliss as he found his hand unconsciously reaching for another. He made no attempt to stop his hand, and happily grabbed another one with his free hand. The dragonite went into a feeding frenzy as the pastries just seemed to be all around him, with each one tasting better than the last. His belly groaned in delight as it tried to make more and more room for each of the confectioneries he was stuffing into his gullet. It distended further and further from him the more he ate, yet he just didn’t want to stop. Sebastian ended up taking a video as he watched his brother chow down on such a large scale. Of course, he couldn’t help himself and had a few more while watching.
It took Zephyr two hours, but he had somehow managed to devour half a bakery’s worth of the pastries he made. However, as he kept eating, not only did he feel his stomach groaning in protest, he felt a wave of tiredness wash over him. Right in the middle of eating a donut, he ended up sitting down and fell asleep on the spot, his stomach gurgling like mad. Sebastian couldn’t help but laugh as he put a hand on his brother’s belly. Although, with all of the food laying around, an idea was already hatching in his brain.
Zephyr awoke a few hours later, nearing the end of the evening. He groaned as he rubbed his head, seeing that he had somehow been transported to his bed. Groggily, he stood up and made his way to the kitchen. He felt as each step seemed to have a bit of extra weight to it that he didn’t expect, causing him to stumble a few times. When he came into the kitchen, he felt a bit of joy spark in his heart. Not only had Sebastian gone out of his way to box all of the confectioneries he had prepared, but he had also gained a little bit of a belly himself from eating about a quarter of what Zephyr had prepared.
He barely had time to enjoy it though as Zephyr realized he would be late for the last group of interviews Orci was holding for the day. Giving a pat to Sebastian’s belly, he threw on the best clothes he could find in five minutes. He found it ever so slightly hard to put them on as he felt resistance whenever he pulled his shirt down or his pants up, leading to a slight overhang that he didn’t have time to fix. Rushing out of his room and taking about five boxes of confectioneries with him, he took to the skies clutching the little pamphlet in his hand.
He arrived at the rather quaint bakery with about thirty minutes to spare. He panted and huffed as he walked into the bakery, only to be met with a figure that sent him to the floor. After running headfirst into Orci’s belly and collapsing to the ground, Zephyr couldn’t help but gulp nervously as Orci looked down on him.
“Oh good heavens! That’s what I get for standing near the door, are you alright?” Zephyr was a stammering mess as he scrambled to pick up the confectioneries that had survived the fall.
“Ye… Ye… Yes, I’m fine! I… I was here for the interview?”
“Ah! Then do come with, it seems you brought some gifts along with you, I do apologize about the ones you dropped, but it seems you brought more than enough!~” Orci offered her hand to the dragonite and helped him upwards, soon leading him to her office while she got one of her employees to clean up the two boxes that didn’t survive the fall. Zephyr was about to stammer something before Orci put her hand up first, shushing him near immediately.
“Now, I want you to hold your tongue dear, food can speak quite nicely~ Afterwards, we will discuss your potential employment.” With her opening one of the boxes, she grabbed quite the juicy donut and chomped into it. With a small shiver down her spine, she knew she simply loved the taste. Zephyr witnessed a true display of gluttony unfold right in front of him as Orci gorged herself on the boxes of delicious pastries. This calm, composed woman turned into a beast that sullied the apron and strained clothes underneath. Zephyr couldn’t help but wonder how his baking had managed to do this to a professional baker. However, rather than have the time to contemplate this, Orci sighed happily as Zephyr realized she had eaten everything within ten minutes.
“I think it’s about time we talk about your employment~”
Chapter 2- Spreading the Dough
Zephyr hopped out of the bakery with a skip in his step, utter excitement filling his heart. He can’t believe he got the job right on the spot just from his food alone. Orci couldn’t help but giggle as she watched the Dragonite take to the sky while shouting happily to himself. Zephyr almost crash-landed when he got home as he wasn’t paying too much attention. After brushing himself off from the ground, he slammed to his dorm with excitement, alerting Sebastian.
“Arceus! Don’t scare a guy like that!”
“I GOT THE JOB I GOT THE JOB I GOT THE JOB I-”
“Easy there Zephyr, you’re acting like a Tauros in a China shop.” After taking a few moments, Zephyr sighed happily as he relaxed on the couch with his brother. As Sebastian popped a rare candy in his mouth, he looked over to Zephyr.
“Well, congrats on getting the job! I wasn’t thinking you were going to get it so quick, but here you are proving me wrong again!”
“You should have seen her, it looked like a monster flick with how messy she got with those donuts!”
“I wish you luck with her then, she sounds like a real piece of work. When do you start?”
“Next Saturday, she said I could work the weekends while I’m still in college. Oh I can’t wait!” While he may have gone to the interview on Wednesday, the next two days felt like weeks in themselves. He couldn’t focus in class at all, finding himself fantasizing as the hours droned on. It didn’t help that quite a bit of the class was catch up, with only sprinklets of new information. He found himself eating more in class, much to the ire of his classmates next to him.
Soon enough, he was in bed, happily clutching his blanket as he stared into the ceiling. He couldn’t sleep, not in the slightest. The minutes ticked by even worse than the hours in class, especially now that there was nothing he could do but wait. He remembered that Orci told him to wake up at 4:30 AM to help her open at 5, but that just made sleeping a futile effort. Soon enough, he passed into half-consciousness, but he could still remember being awake during that whole time when his alarm rung.
Sebastian groaned as he put his head further into the pillow while Zephyr frantically and tiredly tried to get ready. However, when he came to his uniform, he stopped for a moment. An apron, something that he swore he would never wear again, was now his uniform at his dream job. His mind flashed through all of his past misfortunes with the grocery store, but soon replaced them with Orci and the sheer size of everything about it. Getting giddy, he quickly threw it on, realizing Orci may have given him one three sizes too big. No matter, eating a quick breakfast, he was on his way flying into the night sky.
He would have liked to get to the bakery earlier, but he was only two minutes away from when Orci requested he show up. Coming in from the back, the dragonite found himself face-first into the orca’s belly once again.
“Oh good heavens, we really need to stop meeting like this!” Helping Zephyr up, she invited him inside… all before his stomach gurgled.
“…You did remember to have breakfast before this, no?”
“S-Something quick, a waffle…”
“My, you’re practically starving yourself! Come now, I’ll make something before we start!~” Orci ran with surprising speeds into the bakery that made Zephyr pause for a few seconds before walking in. He gasped as he saw Orci with tendrils sprouting from her, all of them working some type of cooking device while she whisks something the old-fashioned way.
“I can see your shocked face, you didn’t read that I was part slime did you?~”
“I… I guess I didn’t… I’m sorry I didn’t mean to st-” But Zephyr was interrupted when a tendril sprang forth and hugged him into her belly.
“Water under the bridge~” And thus, a small smorgasbord was made for the dragonite which was placed in the break room.
“I’ll get started here, you eat up and I’ll call you if I need you before you’re done~” He was just stunned when he saw what was before him. It looked as if someone was trying to feed a family of eight… and she was expecting him to eat this within three hours before they open? He slapped himself out of it when he smelled the pastries Orci had prepared. He found his maw opening on his own and devouring a baker’s dozen of donuts within a few minutes. It was as if there was an aura around this place that just seemed to let him eat and eat and eat.
About halfway into the hour and already three quarters of the way into the meal, Orci shouted out.
“Excuse me? Could you help me carry a few of these?”
“Sure thing!” Zephyr went to get up, but found the weight of his actions literally weighing on him. His gut was enormous, bulging out of him a good foot. Nearly every part of him was screaming to get out of there, to save himself while he still had the chance. Yet, he couldn’t help but get a tad giddy seeing his gut. So, with pep in his step, he tried to help Orci, only to get himself stuck in the door frame.
“Use my door dear, I don’t think you’re quite going to fit~” Zephyr realized how Orci was able to come and go as he saw the double-doors next to the employee exit. A gentle blush came across as he freed himself and he went to join Orci. Now he understood why the kitchen was so huge, it was for huge bakers! As he wobbled his way to Orci, he picked up one of Orci’s aprons without thinking and let it slip on with no troubles, going to pick up a few trays of food.
“Oh dear, shouldn’t you wear mitts?”
“It’s alright! Dragonites are resistant to fire!” Gathering a laugh from Orci, he moved to the display case where he started setting up for the day.
“Would you like to finish the snack in the break room?”
“Naw, I’m good for now, plus I have to actually WORK for you, right?”
“I suppose so~” Two other employees ended up coming in an hour later to help finish prep, but Zephyr had to apologize quite a bit as he kept smushing them into the walls. Strangely enough, they seemed quite fine with it and even encouraged it a few times to help him get used to his new sizes. Zephyr couldn’t help but wonder why, but he was quickly pulled away by Orci.
“Now dear, hope you don’t mind working with the customers for today?” A pit opened up in Zephyr as she said that. After his last experience, he was dreading working with the public.
“Now now, don’t fret, you’ll have me by your side, alright?”
“Okay… Thank you.” With that, the doors to the bakery opened. The day was pretty uneventful after that, all things considered. Orci had to help Zephyr with the cash register a few times as it was a higher end model, but he picked up the groove of it with time. He found the customers were much nicer here than the grocery store, and they seemed to actually respect the work he was doing. He couldn’t help but get giddy every time he saw people eating his creations and enjoying each and every one of them. Orci couldn’t help but smile to herself as she saw the spark of motivation ignite into a passionate flame within the dragonite. She knew he’d fit in just fine.
While Zephyr was definitely not used to working twelve hours in one day, he still had a bit of energy left in him when the time to clock out came. He was still unbelievably happy at what this business had to offer him. Orci came up to him and gave him a rather goopy hug. While he wasn’t expecting it, he happily hugged back before grabbing his bag, which felt a mighty bit heavier than he remembered. Waving to Orci, he took to the skies, but still found some difficulty thanks to his added weight.
Coming home, Sebastian couldn’t help but gasp as he saw Zephyr’s frame.
“So… Uh… I take it you like it there?”
“Oh it was the best! You should have seen me, I was brimming from ear to ear in smiles! The customers were all super nice! This one elder couple even gave me a hefty tip! Oh and this other…” Sebastian slightly tuned out as Zephyr rambled, but he couldn’t help but feel proud his brother found something he enjoyed. Soon enough, Zephyr tired himself out and collapsed onto his bed, eager for tomorrow.
Chapter 3- Garnished Dreams
Zephyr had been a proud worker for Orci for over four years now. Business was booming like mad, with barely any time to stuff anyone’s face except for the customers. Zephyr had graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business about two years ago and moved full-time into working at the bakery. Along with his hours growing, his paunch size rivaled even Orci’s massive gut now, something she was very proud of. However, Orci knew Zephyr had even more potential. So, pulling him aside one morning, she began to talk about his future.
“Now, you’ve been a marvelous worker for me Zephyr, I’m quite proud!”
“D’aw, thank you Orci!”
“However, I will admit, I feel like your growth will be stunted if you stay here for too much longer.” Zephyr felt his heart sink to the depths of his morbidly obese stomach.
“Wuh… Am I being fired?”
“Oh no no no! In fact, quite the opposite! With all the business we’ve been getting, I feel as though we’re two massive fish in a tank too small~ No, I want to open a second bakery, and I want you to run it!” Zephyr didn’t know what to think. On the one hand, he was horribly excited at the prospect of running his own bakery, already being able to use the degree he had earned. On the other hand, he was extremely nervous that he wouldn’t be able to meet the potential. Orci, sensing that he was shaking from the revelation, pulled him into a hug with her tendrils.
“Now now, don’t you fret, I’ll be there to help you with the first week or so~ Along with that, I’ll give you training before it actually happens, as the bakery isn’t set to open for another six months!” A wave of relief washed over him as he heard the start was so far away, but he couldn’t help but feel inadequate to the task at hand. As his worries tried to mount again, he found a donut stuffed into his maw.
“You worry too much, you’ll be fine~” With a gulp that sent the whole donut into his gut, he sighed before doubling down on the hug.
“Thank you… I really mean it, thank you…” With the hug lasting about a minute, Orci broke the hug and tossed him his apron.
“Now come on, we have to open again!”
“Right.” Thus, another successful business day passed and Zephyr left with a small bag of goodies. He didn’t fly too much anymore, instead using a used car that he had been able to pick out thanks to the funds from the bakery. Along with that, he pulled up to a small townhouse, which he was able to pick out a section with Sebastian’s help in pooling in funds. Setting his things down on the counter nearby, he couldn’t help but smirk as he saw Sebastian sneaking snacks. He had developed a bit of a musclegut over the years, but he swears he’s more powerful than he’s ever been.
“Hey hey! You’re back! Whatcha got this time?”
“Just some cookies and a danish.” Setting the bag aside, he yawned and preset the oven to 450 degrees and instinctively got some dough out to toss.
“Making pizza again?”
“Hey, I like it, I found out how to make it, and the ingredients are relatively cheap!”
“Come on, we know pizza is your comfort food, what’s on your mind?”
“Well, I’ve been promoted to run the second bakery that’s going to be made in sixth months.”
“ARCEUS THAT’S INCREDIBLE!” However, Sebastian could see the growing apprehension on his brother’s face, and came over to hug him.
“Look, I know you’ll do well, you have a little worrying stint, and then you excel to outrageous degrees.”
“Yeah… plus, Orci said she would help me for the first bit of it.”
“See, you’ll be fine!”
“Yeah…” It was a restless night that night. So many possibilities flashed through Zephyr’s head. Sure, the failures rushed through his head at times, but he couldn’t help that the excitement of getting to run his own bakery was swiftly overtaking that fear. He found the butterflies in his stomach multiplying, so much so that his sleep was more like five interrupted power naps. Luckily, his sleep schedule started getting better as the six months sped through.
Zephyr found himself struggling with all this new computer work he had to do. However, Orci made sure he was well stocked with snacks as he worked. He had to admit, sometimes his mind would trail off and ask himself how Orci was able to do this with such a massive gut. He found himself struggling to reach the computer at times with his growing gut, but he made it work in time. Of course, he still got to work in the actual bakery portion, which he still cherished every second he got.
The day was eventually upon the pair of bakers. Zephyr finally got to take a good look at the bakery he would be in charge to run. While he admitted it was a tad small, he couldn’t help but think that was due to the fact that he had put on so much weight since he first started at Orci’s bakery. Although, with any new bakery, he had to meet his new employees. So, going around to the back, he gasped as he saw his brother wearing an apron.
“Orci contacted me, saying you needed some temporary help until you and her discuss hiring new people, so here I am! Mind you, I am DEFINITELY not used to waking up this early.” Zephyr hugged his brother tight, all before going back and hugging Orci tight.
“Now now~ Save the love for after your first day! And before you ask, you don’t have to worry, I closed mine for the day so I could truly help you out on your first day.” With that said, she handed Zephyr a small key and showed him to the front door. Zephyr could feel his hand shaking as he tried to get the key in, all before Sebastian’s hand helped guide him in.
“Look, we know you’re scared, but it’s going to be alright! If Orci’s pride in you is anything to go by, your first day will go off without a hitch!”
“Yeah… Thanks again for helping out!” With the feraligatr’s hand helping him in, he turned the key and opened the door. A wave of new smells assaulted all of their noses. Zephyr could tell this place hadn’t seen a lick of cooking, let alone baking. It had all the feels of a small office building. Zephyr turned to Orci, who seemed to have a glint in her eye as she took in the smell. Within moments, Zephyr had that same glint in his eye as he thought of all the possibilities he could create here.
He ran around the building like a kid in a candy store. Seeing all the equipment Orci had gotten him, his very own office, he couldn’t believe that this was all his. Orci couldn’t help but giggle as Zephyr went on and on about how thankful he was for this. She eventually had to snap his attention back by saying,
“So, what do we do first, boss?~” He couldn’t help but feel his tail wagging like mad as she called him that.
“Well, we’ve got about three hours before we open for the very first time, so we need to get our prep ready!” With a skip in his step, he took Sebastian’s hand and lead him into the kitchen, with Orci following close behind. Orci and Zephyr fell back into a routine they had known so well, while Zephyr occasionally stopped to help Sebastian out with things he didn’t know about this level of baking. While Sebastian may have picked up a few things from Zephyr doing some home baking, he had to admit that he didn’t realize how hard this was.
Eventually, the time came for Zephyr to open the doors to the public. He felt those butterflies going absolutely manic within his stomach, though he soon found his thoughts derailed by a black hand being placed on his shoulder.
“You’ve got this, we’ve got this~” Zephyr couldn’t help but let a tear well up in his eye as she said that. Wiping it away, he turned back to the bakery. He saw Sebastian getting the display finalized, putting in trays of confectioneries that Zephyr had personally chosen to go on the menu for today. He saw the menu he had helped design with Orci, giving it his own personal flair to differentiate his bakery from Orci’s, yet still give it that familiar feel. He saw the small dining area they had set up, all neatly put together with a classical feel. With a small huff, he turned back to the door and put his hands on the lock. With one turn, his bakery was officially open.
