I would suggest the preferance for spears is as much for mobility's sake is it is for distance, a snake cannot simply quickstep out of the way, it has to move its entire body to dodge a low blow. The preferance for a long shafted weapon keeps the foe at bay, and provides the 'second foot' if you will, to push more of one's weight in a given direction.

Nice detail in the body and pose. The spear is a great addition, that adds a lot to the character. ^^
It's hard to picture an anthro snake, but I think that you did a great job on this one!
