Breaking up a protest is easy enough - reasoning with protestors is not. Watch what happens when tribal police destroy a protest that is blocking the highway.Tribal Police Ride-Along #2Another day, another adventure. This time, Janus is undertaking another volunteer effort to add to his journalism work. However, this will be another memorable moment for him in particular.
This time, a different call is being answered by the tribal police en route to the location - a possible disturbance call.
Roaring down the road, Janus is riding shotgun once again, this time with Red Rock police officer Cameron Jones. This time, the vehicle they're in is a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, one of the most powerful variants made. Also following behind them is a Porsche Cayman S police car headed to the same location.
“So what's the situation now? A disturbance call or a road hazard?” Janus mused dryly.
“From the details gathered, there's some sort of roadblock going on and it's a big problem.” Cameron reported. While carefully threading the needle between the road and the dirt, Cameron stays on the shoulder, aware of a possible traffic jam ahead while they edge closer towards the destination.
The black cat snorts, “Sounds like some kind of protest - typical Just Stop Oil protestors blocking traffic and vandalizing items. They're just asking to be arrested.”
“Just Stop Oil? What is that - some sort of slogan?” Cameron wondered while racing towards the call.
“They're a dumb protest organization wanting to stop the burning of fossil fuels. They're mainly in Europe - and they’ve been turning themselves into speed bumps, hazards, and (while I’m not surprised) possible roadkill.” Janus reported. “If it's that important, why not just sponsor and promote clean energy such as electric vehicles and solar power instead of resorting to extreme measures?”
“Climate change is the same thing we face. Only difference is - those types of protestors are literally removed from the road and arrested for disturbing the peace.” Cameron reasoned. “They block traffic intentionally - that's a hazard in itself. What if an ambulance or fire engine is delayed because of that?”
“It's plain dumb, for one thing. For another, it's pointless.” Janus huffed. Throwing up his hands, the black cat stays planted in the passenger seat of the bulky SUV, bouncing lightly from the bumps and the rumble strip.
A short time later, Cameron, Janus, and other officers arrive at the scene to find a shattered roadblock along with at least 10 protestors on the sides of the road, all arrested. There is also a Ford GT police interceptor and a Nissan GT-R SpecV (R35) police interceptor, both cars sitting off the road ahead of the protestors. And the arrested protestors themselves are being watched over by two wolf officers, one female and one male.
Stepping out of the Grand Cherokee, Cameron notices one of the officers and one of the protestors arguing. Approaching them, Cameron requests, “Estefania, What's going on here that has you two arguing?”
The female wolf officer huffs in annoyance while responding, “Just got through handling these guys with help from Vershinin and now we're waiting for local police to arrive so they can haul these idiots away.”
“Hey Missy, we're only protesting peacefully for a noble cause! Untie us this instant!” One of the protestors suddenly barked in demand.
“And you people intentionally block the highway again? Fat chance!” Estefania barked back. “There's a right way and a wrong way to protest! You all chose the wrong way so you’re going to jail.”
The time it takes for local law enforcement to arrive is approximately 10 minutes. But these guys won't be facing any serious jail time. Charged in court, each protestor was slapped with a hefty fine and a warning, leading Janus to post a warning on his blog following the incident…
“Protestors beware! Unless you want to be turned onto a speed bump or roadkill, then this is for you! Maybe the Just Stop Oil gang can learn a thing or two from these hapless idiots. Don't they know it's an absolute crime to illegally block a public highway?”
But what exactly led up to this incident?
EARLIER IN THE DAY…A roadblock is suddenly in the middle of the highway with at least ten people surrounding it, attempting to literally block traffic from passing. Some of them sat directly in the road while others just stood. The banner, in an all blue backdrop has the words displayed in capital white lettering,
STOP CLIMATE CHANGE!But these efforts proved futile when local commuters took to the shoulder and the soft dirt to get around the roadblock. This also caught the attention of a police officer, who also happened to be test driving her new patrol car when she received a report about a blockage in the middle of the highway.
With the 5.4L Modular V8 singing in her ears, Red Rock officer Estefania Pharrell accelerates down the highway in her Ford GT patrol car. Activating her lights and siren, she mumbles, “Don't tell me… have they finally come here too??”
A separate interview displays Estefania sitting with her hands folded in her lap. She relates, “I was pretty happy to receive a brand new patrol car to roar down the road in. I happened to receive the call during my test drive and I immediately went into action.”
Returning to the action, officer Pharrell arrives, having noticed the banner. But then the female officer pulls off a risky, daredevil move.
“Being sponsored with a local racing division, we spend some of our free time doing highway races that are legally sanctioned, so we do have some hot moments where we pull some stunt risks.” Estefania further recalls in her interview. She blushes, “I decided to pull one and break that barrier. But hey, it helped a great deal.”
Back to the action, the female officer slows down and pulls a drift maneuver, throwing her Ford GT across the road in a wide-angle slide. The protestors begin to scatter when they hear and see the careening police car streaking towards them; with a wide-angle slide, the police interceptor slams through the roadblock, completely shattering the banner and the rest of the blockade. This earns the female officer the ire of the protestors themselves. But this is only just the beginning of their troubles.
While Estefania doubles back after destroying the roadblock, another police interceptor arrives with a warning being issued from the loudspeaker:
:Get off the road or you will be taken out!:Inside the Porsche Cayman S police interceptor, Red Rock officer Vershinin Vercetti observes the remains of the shattered roadblock but when the male wolf sees the protestors trying to come back onto the asphalt, the male wolf officer hits the accelerator and charges directly for the remaining part of the blockade, forcing the protestors to dive away from the incoming police car; they can only watch on horror as their message is destroyed. But the situation doesn't stop there.
One of the protestors complains about being put directly in danger, to which Estefania rebuffs sarcastically, “Yeah, that's nice… ON THE FLOOR, NOW!!!”
Together, Estefania and Vershinin work together in arresting all 10 protestors while waiting on local law enforcement to arrive. At this point, Cameron arrives, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk police SUV. With the situation taken care of, traffic begins to flow freely with help from the officers.
In her interview, Estefania wraps-up her part by making a cautionary disclaimer, “People who protest have a right way and a wrong way to go about it. As far as the right way is concerned, you need to plan ahead, know your route, and make sure everything is in order. That way, there will be less chaos. If the wrong way is chosen, such as in this incident, you're only landing yourself a one-way ticket to jail.”
Following the interview with Estefania, Janus makes a note: “Never, ever piss off the tribal police unless you want to go to jail.”
