Short version:
The nostovians are an alien race I created just for the fun of it. I realize that it is hardy a unique alien cocept, but I wasnt trying to do one, I grew up partially on old cheesy science fiction, and I still have a bit of a fondness for that style.

Long version: (you do not have to read all this unless you are a nerd)
The Nostovians dislike the term "Alien", not only since in many peoples mind, it implies extraterrestial origin, which is a common misconception. The fact is that Nostovians are of entierly terrerstial origin, only product of a separate abiogenesis event. However, seeing them as "terrestial aliens" is quite a bit of simplification, part of their cells are remains of a unique type of cell that exist nowhere else, but trough endosymbiosis they have absorbed bot green algae and animal cells.

Nostovian evolution is complicated and a hotly debated topic, but it has been driven by a type of neurons that's roughly analogous to our mirror neurons. Though beyond simply firing when observing an act and when doing it yourself, their particular kind of "mime neurons" as they have been called allows the animal to duplicate elements of other animals body plans, which may at least partially explain why Nostovians have chemical communication like ants, a photosynthetic but otherwise very amphibian skin and the general body plan of a human being. These mime neurons have deteriorated overtime, but remains of that neural structure is said to be part of the reason why Nostovians are social and generally compassionate.

Nostovians are divided into male and female and the males are in turn divided between alpha-males and beta-males. The nostovian alpha-males keep harems of up to ten-twelve individuals, meanwhile, the beta-males look quite convincingly female and can sneak into the harems and mate with females under the noses of the alpha-males. In the past beta-males was killed when discovered, but as their society progressed, the harem structure began to dissolve, though there are still discrimination issues, both towards females and towards beta-males.

The nostovians have a quite complex social system, divided into tribes with tribe leaders arising trough celebricy and natural carisma. Being a tribe leader is not an official position, however, the govermental leaders tend to be tribe leaders, if only be becoming one retroactively once they've gotten an official position of power.
