Searching for an inn posed some trouble for Gyako. Not only was he unfamiliar with the town but his only guide had just been ‘arrested.’ He aimlessly walked down a few streets looking for signs of what could be an inn. He passed a few markets where some cats were selling some fish. Both of them had matted fur and reeked of the smell of fish. One manned the stand while the other cleaned the fish in the back. They gave Gyako a look when he approached them, they knew he was an outsider.
“Ummm…” Gyako hesitated, “Do you know where I can find an inn?”
The cat cleaning the fish scoffed at his question. The other one just pointed down the street to the left. “Down there,” he said with his yellow chipped teeth.
“T-thanks,” Gyako replied trying to stay polite.
Gyako can see that the people in this town were not as friendly as those back home in Pallas. They seemed to care for themselves here mostly, but Gyako headed in their direction and proceeded down the street. The houses here were quite nice. Small, well put together and quite clean. Some made of wood, others of bricks and stone. One house stood out to him as it had a sign at the front. It read “Island Dreams” a name Gyako remembered from when he talked with the guards at the side entrance of the town.
“Oh hey, this must be an inn,” Gyako told Erilia who was getting restless on his back. “Let’s take a look.”
They entered the cozy house, walking through some beads that hung from the doorway and were hit with a strong smell of incense. A couple of pictures stood on the wall and a small couch sat in the corner. It looks like it had never been sat on. Gyako approached what looked like a serving counter and looked inside. Nobody was there.
“Ummm helloooo? Is anybody home?” Gyako called.
Silence. Gyako and Erilia looked at each other trying to decide on whether to check another house when they heard an elderly woman’s voice from the back of a room they could not see.
“I’m coming I’m coming,” yelled the voice, followed by the sounds of something crashing to the ground. “Good Flambile! Help me.”
Erilia snickered at the sudden outburst but Gyako stood more concerned for the woman. The head of a white elderly cat peered from the corner of the room behind the counter.
“Oh customers, I’m so sorry. I was taking some boxes down from the selves and they fell. Since my boys have become guards, they haven’t been around much to help me.”
“Marlow and Aldow right?” Gyako asked.
“Yes! Yes!” the cat exclaimed, “Do you know my boys?”
“Yeah they recommended us to come here, we were looking to spend the night.”
“Right right, well a room is 10 gold”
Gyako looks in his bag to find exactly 10 gold coins left. He could have sworn he had packed more and then he remembered.
“Damn Taiyka,” he cursed under his breath.
Gyako handed the innkeeper the rest of his money and she directed him to his room upstairs. It wasn’t very big. There was one bed in the corner that was quite puffy. A small table and a lamp sat in front of a window with rather dusty curtains. The table had an ink and feather for any guests who wanted to get some writing down. A small cupboard stood at the back wall for any apparel the cats wanted to lay up. Erilia quickly made the bed her home or more accurately her playground. She started bouncy bouncing and giggling on the bed.
“Bouncy bouncy!!” she laughed. “Gyako! Come play with me!!!”
“Don’t do that Erilia, we don’t want to mash up this lady’s house,” scolded Gyako.
Erilia landed with her arms folded in a huff. “Awwww you’re no funnnnn!”
“Sorry Erilia but someone has to be the adult here.”
Gyako tucked away his bag in the corner of the cupboard and went to look out the window. It had a good view of the town. He could make out the market and shopping centre he was just at. Suddenly he heard a loud sound from the heavens.
BOOOOM!!!
Dark clouds loomed overhead which was quite surprising as it had been sunny a few minutes ago. The storm had rolled in fast. Soon the winds began to pick up and many of the cats on the streets quickly scattered to get to shelter.
“I guess that wraps up our little exploration of the town for today,” Gyako said with some melancholy in his voice, “I wonder if there’s a place to get dinner, but I don’t wanna get wet… or struck by lightning.”
As if she was listening in on Gyako’s conversation the old cat’s voice rang up from the staircase.
“Would you two dears like some supper, I baked some bread.”
