The werewolf was simply lucky that the soldier was alone, and his weapon was clearly not powerful enough to kill such a fluffy mountain of muscles. I wonder what a wolf will do if confronted by a group of experienced big game hunters armed with 45-70 caliber lever action rifles and 10-gauge or even 8-gauge shotguns.
In this case, the most sensible course of action for the werewolf would actually be to run into the forest and ambush the hunters if they were to pursue him. After all, being vulnerable in open areas, since humans clearly have more firepower, in the dense forest the werewolf will have a significant advantage, especially if he himself is armed, for example with throwing spears or a bow and arrows.
