Really interesting that there's a Shinto shrine on that island. It means they're in the territory of one or more kami, or Shinto deities. Kami are a wildly variable bunch - some are very friendly, some are implacably hostile toward intruders, and some are neutral. It'll be interesting to see exactly what sort of kami inhabits this place.
Being as it's likely to be a kami it probably won't look anything like Brand. More likely to be a Chinese-style dragon, something like Haku from Spirited Away. (Who himself was actually based on a dragon created by a Western author - Fuchur, better known as Falkor, from The Neverending Story.)
