But, he was not a real boy, how half-donkey will live is a question. Maybe, all incomplete specimens are doomed to die shortly from their organs disfunction. Or, maybe, they will revert to a human or donkey, depending on their state, but slow and painful.
In THE book, it was a disease /donkey flu/, once you catched it, there are no cure except fairy intervence.
