In the medieval Islamic world, they were slaves turned soldiers. Even though they were owned by someone, they had a pretty high status.

Well, that makes sense.

btw, i remembered a friend who actually believed that 300 was historically accurate. When he saw me playing Rome: Total War, he asked why Spartans were using armor "like those boy-loving Athenians"

Very nicely done, though she's not quite a Mamluk. They came around much much later in history, and were also the only people to curb stomp the Mongols. History lesson aside, very fine work here.
