This month's offering is a very short instrumental that my brother and I recorded many years ago for a 'Novices' album that never ended up coming together. It's a little hard to pin a date on this one, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was probably from 1991. The song is called "Elephant Song", for no particular reason other than that it just somehow seemed appropriate to the song's feel. After we recorded the main part of the song and settled on its name, we added a fade-in intro that includes the "I am not an animal!" line from David Lynch's movie "The Elephant Man".
What I like about this song is that it consits of a bunch of very basic melodies layered on top of each other, so that it's very simple, yet in its own way sounds almost a little bit intricate lol. At the time we recorded this, I had a cheap little Casio keyboard that could sample about a second-and-a-half of whatever sound you chose. My brother and I sampled ourselves singing this weird combination of notes, and used it in the background (you have to listen pretty closely to hear it behind the layered keyboard melodies, but it's there). And I think that's about all there is to say about this song... other than that my usual disclaimer applies: You are entering lo-fi territory. Are you cool with that?
Good. Then by all means proceed. :)

Maybe I'll check it out. To be honest, computer recording/mixing programs scare me lol. I may look into them for any future stuff I work on, but I doubt I'll ever go back and clean up my old recordings. Most of them are around 15 years old, so I figure they can be forgiven for being a little rough-sounding. :)
Thank you! Yeah, my brother and I were really happy with it at the time (and we still are), because it didn't sound like anything else we'd done. We were used to doing more "aggressive" music that sometimes consisted of only drums and vocals (I know, hard to imagine, but you work with what you have lol).
