A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: carrot
The Kingdom of Kervina’s Court Circular ran a routine announcement on its website, stating for those who cared to read it that King Herbert, Queen Ariadne, and Princess Electra were spending the weekend at Baron Greensward's estate overlooking the seaport of Altansa as the guests of the Princess’ fiancé’s family.
The news that Electra was pregnant was revealed to her parents and in-laws after everyone was settled into their rooms at the mansion. Public announcements would be made on Monday, after the King and Queen returned to Highpoint.
Security wasn’t a problem; part of the guard detail had taken guestrooms at the Hart estate, with others bivouacked in the woods to keep the paparazzi at arm’s length.
Despite the warm weather, the older whitetails played a few spirited games of doubles tennis before lunch, relinquishing the court in the afternoon to cheer on Daniel and Electra as they played doubles against the young buck’s brother Keith and sister-in-law Lidia. Following a few hours to rest and get cleaned up afterwards, the families dined in private. Keith and Lidia’s fawns were being looked after by a babysitter.
Elaine, Daniel’s mother, had given the kitchen staff the day off so she could cook for the group, although she allowed her daughter-in-law and the Queen to lend a paw.
Faces looked up expectantly as Elaine entered the dining room with a covered cake dish. She set it down in the middle of the table and removed the cover with a flourish. “Who’s for dessert?” the whitetail doe asked.
On the cake stand stood a layer cake robed in creamy white icing. Keith eyed it before he and Daniel started staring daggers at each other, and their mother said, “Stop it, you two.”
“Is that what I think it is?” Herbert asked, his nose twitching.
“It is,” Elaine said in a pleased tone. “My mother’s recipe for carrot cake.”
Herbert and Ariadne both grinned as Geoffrey said, “Looks good. Ellie, my love, you’ve outdone yourself. Again.”
Elaine acknowledged the praise before glaring at her sons. “Daniel! Keith!” she said as the two grown bucks started to shove good-naturedly at each other, plates already held out. “Stop it, you two.”
The two bucks adopted looks of completely spurious innocence as Lidia and Electra started laughing. Elaine sliced the cake and doled out plates bearing the slices to the King and Queen first, Electra and Lidia second, and her husband Geoffrey before taking a piece for herself. “You two get to split the last quarter,” she said to her two sons.
“Thank you, Mother,” Daniel and Keith practically chorused before nearly lunging for the cake server. Daniel won and, aware of his parents studying him, scrupulously cut two equal pieces. His younger brother still squinted at him before the two started to eat.
It truly was excellent cake, with a moist, dense crumb, mildly sweet and with the grated carrots, chopped walnuts and raisins providing a variety of textures. The cream cheese icing made up for the relative lack of sugar in the cake.
“Delicious,” the King said with his mouth full, and grinned as his wife poked him in the ribs to remind him of his manners.
Geoffrey merely smiled at his wife, and the two leaned in and nuzzled each other.
Lidia gave her husband a glance before turning to Electra. “I got Elaine’s recipe as a present when I married Keith,” the doe said. “Between him and the fawns, I can barely keep it in the house longer than a day.” The two young does laughed.
Electra asked Elaine, “Can I get a copy of your recipe? Please?”
The older doe’s ears swiveled. “On one condition.”
The younger doe’s ears swiveled. “Yes?”
“You let Geoff and I babysit the fawns.”
“So, the old carrot and stick treatment,” Electra said, to a chorus of groans from the other deer at the table.

When I was growing up, and my brother and I were eyeing the rather tasty frosted cakes made by the local Stop & Shop, the rule imposed by my mother was this: one brother cut the cake, and then, the other brother got to choose which piece of cake.
Diamond-cutters never cut their products as carefully.
