Took my first trip to Death Valley this weekend. Definitely an interesting place. I LOOOOOVE the sand dunes! Probably one of the most photographically interesting places I've ever seen. Unfortunately, I only had ~15 min before the sun set so i had to act fast and find the best composition I could that avoided the TONS of footprints that were everywhere.
I like this shot and it really illustrates the potential of this place, but I KNOW I can do better if I have more time to set up a good composition. I think I can do even better on editing this shot alone (and will be hopefully trying to improve this pictures editing this week). Thankfully, I live only 1.75 hours away (less than one tank of gas round trip), so I WILL be going back! And hopefully often.
What I did: 3 shot custom HDR (+2, 0, -2 EV), 2 color balance layers and 1 levels layer, unsharp mask (300, 0.2, 0%).

really nice shot.
the last 30 min of the day makes for some great shots. giving the shadows to the lines in the sand..
too early and you wont have em..
Death vally is one of the places Id love to travel to with my camera.
I like How you layer your HDR stuff. always a fun way to compose great pictures.
BTW what processing softwear do you use?

Thanks ^^ Yea, that's definitely the best time to shoot the desert. It's best to get there early enough though to scout around a bit to find the best place for the best composition FIRST. Maybe next time, lol.
HDR's kinda layer themselves automatically. Then you just tweak them for the kind of effect you want out of it. Right now I'm using Photoshop CS5, but I have Photomatix Pro. I just haven't gotten around to figuring it out yet.
