Alright, I'm a bit fuzzy on all the names and such. Alphonse is an Adler, but is waging war on behalf of the Ulfur clan? I assume another noble family, and one under Alphonse's demesne... but why is the chancellor counseling violence on behalf of another family?

Yeah I can see how that'd be confusing! Alder is kind of a title, Ulfur is the original surname. Which is why it's called House Ulfur/Clan Ulfur. The King and his immediately family - as in wife and kids, take on the surname when they are in power, but otherwise are called Ulfur as their surname if t hey are just related to the King.
Alphonse is getting revenge for his mother, brothers, sister and his nieces/nephews who were killed in the attack.
