i had an anthro-rat superhero back in 6th grade, just a side character in a cast of hundreds...Then in 8th grade i wrote about 5 chapters of a long prose novel that involved one of the last humans traveling trough various post-apocalypse
war-zone anthro tribal regions...Went on to all sorts of other stories...
The summer i was 17 anthro characters again started to emerge in my work, - this time in my drawings in my sketch books. This was the first, influenced by Roger Dean, Vaughn Bode, Kelly Freas, etc - early hints of anthro were just part of science-fiction/fantasy writing and art - Cordwainer Smiths's classics, Kirby's Kamandi, Crumb's Fritz the Cat, the Planet of the Apes movies...
There was lots of furry/anthro in modern times before there was any sort of fandom...

In the late 90's or earl 2000's, my father gave me a copy of some Science Fiction short story compilation books and one had "Scanners live in vain" and another "The ballad of lost C'Mell" and I found those two stories the most fascinating ones. I later bought that "Rediscovery of man" collected book of his short stories, and I think along with JG Ballard, there are no finer short sci-fi stories.
i was doing anthro stories for a decade or two before someone turned me on to Cordwainer Smith. His stories are absolutely haunting!
They stay with you, something under your skin, something that works it way in there and informs who you, what it means to human, or a sentient being. JG Ballard also does something like that...that haunting quality...

Thanks! ^_^
It was another year or two after this that i started to draw with a bit more skill...and a few more years till i went pro in the animation biz...It was just good influences - heroes like Roger Dean, Freas, Bode, Frazetta, Wally Wood, Kirby, Steranko, Adams, Coben etc...all the stuff that came after - Smith, Kaluta, Jones, Wrightson....Nowdays kids starting off have such a range of terrific artists...What were your influences to start drawing and making stories?

I have many influences, it seems - but I did like ink drawings when I was a kid. I kinda liked the Where's Waldo books when I saw them.
There was a set of books by Walter Brooks, the Freddy the Detective series, that had the kind of drawings I like to make, as well. I was also influenced by David Macaulay.
Story-wise, my influences are Britcoms and various and sundry artists online. You're even inspiring me presently.

Wow! i loved the Freddy books when i was kid - they were my faves for a couple years. i thought they were pretty obscure until a year ago or so when i saw there was a lot about them online....and i think i have a couple of Macaulay's books...
haven't watched much of britcoms....brit sf/fantasy like Hitchhiker's Guide, Black Adder, Red Dwarf, etc....

The first Mr. Ed story came out in Liberty magazine in 1937. The rest is history.
my sophomore year was '77 - major in Fine Art minor in Philosophy electives in Psych, Anthropology, Asian Music, Modular Synthesis, and spending endless hours in the library (my real education). ...i was planning on going back to school after the first few years in the animation biz to get a psych degree, but after reading about the insanely cruel sleep deprivation faced by young interns i dodged that bullet and stayed in the arts.
Yeah, my girlfriend has (one of) her Masters in psychology -- the other is in nursing. She started training as a therapist at a psychiatric hospital 8 years ago. She's on 24-hour call; I can't even guess how many of our date nights have been disrupted by her phone. Full moon and new moon are the worst times of the month; when the going gets crazy the crazy get going! She's crazy enough to have gone back for her PhD., the calls will be a little less hectic with a number of subordinates to delegate to.
