I believe SSI is mostly a European thing... so while superior, it may indeed be harder to utilize in the US :(
Here in Europe both SSI and PADI are widely available, and you can usually dive with either one since they have agreements on rough equivalency of their programs and certificates.
I did a ton of research and decided to stick with SSI back when I was starting this hobby around 4 years ago ^^

Congrats on your cert! I do my best to convince anyone and everyone to do it. SCUBA is so much fun! Now time to start working on your advanced! Night dives are so cool, and being able to go deeper. I want to work on my enriched air next.
Hobbies are expensive. I knw that I have spent quite a bit on both SCUBA and on my fox. And neither seem to stop! >_<

All the cool hobbies are very expensive! I assume this is in a different universe then the one where you can transform into a mermaid? It would be a bummer if you got all geared up and your wet suit on, only to sprout a tail fin and ripe your wet suit like your shorts that other time haha.
What my local dive base recomends to own are in this order:
ABC Equipment (Finns+ Shoes, Mask, "Snorkel" (No diver uses it when scuba, but you will have to do apnoe tasks in higer courses like the stress and rescue))
Own Wetsuit (When it's hard to find fitting rent ones) + Gloves and Hood when diving in cold waters
Dive Computer (Is higly recomendet and can move upward in this list)
Regulator set (Hygiene + Comfort)
BCD
Extra Equipment for cold water dives. (In lake Constanze the water temp can be 7°C down on 18 meters.
(Lead is rennted from all, air bottles too.)
I have some own led, but thats only a comfort thing, has a nicer formfactor.
Renting is fine and good when you don't dive regulary or only on far away places.
What I recomend then is at least to have vour own ABC Equipment and a dive Computer
I dive with a Seac Screen (Dive Computer) and be happy with it. But you have to decide what you want or like, I can only give you the tipp that in cold water you are great full when the display is bigger and ther fore easier to read.
My rest equipment is from Scuba Pro with small exceptions. (Shoes, Mask)
