OK, here's the answer I wrote for your other post in the old thread:
To be honest, it would have killed one of his defining characteristics. The big round glasses were part of his character design from the very beginning (Marcie from "Peanuts" was one of the ingredients I used to design him) and they make him look nerdy, intellectual, and also hide his eyes like a mask.
I tried drawing him with visible eyes through the glasses, but it did not look very good, so I decided not to do that. Later on, a reader suggested the glasses were mirrored to prevent anybody from seeing his eyes--which are "the windows to the soul"--and I adopted that concept. Later still, my husband suggested the glasses were a heads-up display for smart-glasses connected to a satellite system.
In-story, his mother forbade him getting eye surgery for fear her enemies could induce the surgeon to harm or kill her only heir. His father built the computer glasses for him, and he uses them in his job as Adjutant to the Duchess. They do link to a Kruger Industries satellite system. They make him the smartest man in the country.
Why not contacts? Well, never mind the questionable cleanliness of the Maramasai, if you had claws on the ends of your fingers, you probably wouldn't be too keen to use contact lenses...
(I personally would not be able to put contacts in my eyes, and I do NOT have claws!)

:) I like to figure out how things world work "in real life," even if I don't use it in the strip, because having detailed character backstories aids in writing a more cohesive story.
I had so much backstory developed for Fred that I ended up writing a novel about his memoirs. If you have not read it, it may interest you:
