Here is a scene where a freelance journalist has a front row seat to a high-speed pursuit in progress. But this pursuit is not done by ordinary cops.Tribal Police Ride-AlongFollowing the Gary Nolan trial and interview, Janus was granted full visitors’ rights to the indigenous Red Rock reservation thanks to the judge. Since that time, the black cat began exploring the reservation freely. But one day held an intriguing moment when he observed several vehicles rolling by decked out in a dark red livery. One of those marked vehicles held the words of a police agency, indicating the property as owned. The following day would also be a testament to the sheer teamwork possessed by what he discovered as tribal cops.
~~~~~“Okay, stand by, Red Rock! We're 4 miles away from Ely!” A police pursuit is underway moving fast along Nevada Highway. And they are approaching the city limits of Ely, Nevada.
“3 miles away, Red Rock! Alert… Alert Nevada State Patrol once we reach the city! Suspect is still going; speeds are over 115 mph now!” The lead officer in the chase wants the State Police to be on standby in case they reach the city. But it looks like they won't have to…
The suspect is driving the powerful Audi S5 (8T), so he is able to stay ahead of the four police cars. Only thing is, sometimes he doesn't want to. But just as they reach the city limits of Ely, Nevada, the suspect swings hard to the left and goes hard on full braking, rocketing the wrong way down an exit ramp.
“Watch it guys! He’s hard on his brakes - he’s turning around, heading back the opposite way on the highway! We're still in pursuit!” Still in the lead during the chase, Red Rock police officer Kieran Jones reports on the situation. With him are two other units as backup. The wolf officer also has a volunteer riding shotgun with him, who is recording the entire chase on his personal camcorder.
During the pursuit, Kieran informs his passenger, “Alright Janus, if this guy bails out, help us corral him. But be careful. We don't know if this guy is armed or not.”
Suddenly, Kieran is forced to slam on the brakes just as the suspect turns around again. One of the backup officers even complains, “This guy is just going around in circles! He's either lost or looking for a spot to bail!”
When Kieran and the other officers turn around, Janus reasons, “I would say both. If he wanted to lose us, he'd hit the freeway in no time. That's what happens 80% of the time.”
“Well, we're about to end this right now!” Kieran warns, “Get ready!”
The vehicle that Kieran is driving is the powerful Porsche 911 Turbo (996), a car that is ahead of its time in the history of the manufacturer. Other units involved in the chase are a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, and a Nissan 370Z (Z34).
Officer Jones guns his Turbocharged Flat-Six engine to the max to catch up to the fleeing Audi when the suspect goes full braking again, forcing him to slow down. Frustrated, the wolf cries out, “Slowing down again! He’s running circles around us! Somebody stop him, quick!”
:All units, heads-up - backup is on the way!:An incoming officer radios that backup is arriving shortly, but this suspect is determined to lose his tail. Every time they catch up, the suspect brake checks and turns around, forcing them to double back also. This is frustrating even for Janus, Kieran's volunteer passenger, who makes a simple suggestion, “Why not just blow his tires to bits? That should stop him.”
“We could try it but we also gotta watch for traffic to– dammit! Turning around again! Someone stop him!” Forced to slam on their brakes again, the officers struggle to stay with their suspect until…
*CRASH!*The suspect is stopped by the backup officer with a ramming impact to the right rear side. From the incoming officer’s dashcam, the perspective is changed with volunteer officer Will Mayfield entering the pursuit. He guns his Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione patrol car to the max in hopes of arriving to join the pursuit. He later spots the black Audi and begins to slow down, seeing the pursuing officers behind the suspect. Watch what happens when the suspect begins to turn around again. At around 30 mph, Officer Mayfield mashes on the accelerator, watching the suspect turn around again. The striped hyena then screams a battle cry while charging towards the black car, “CHARGE!!!”
Smacking into the right rear side of the suspect car should disable it but this guy is determined to get away. Although Officer Mayfield is able to put a dent in him, the suspect continues running, pushing his S5 to its limit.
The officers soon find themselves coming into the city limits of Las Vegas and they notify their command to have the local metropolitan police on standby. But one by one, they find themselves suddenly losing control coming down off the highway, including the suspect.
Nearly losing control, the suspect manages to regain control after almost wiping out. The tribal officers also lose control, but they’re able to drift along the sharp bend and regain control much quicker than the suspect. To add to that, the tribal officers have been granted consent to continue their pursuit into Las Vegas.
This chase later ends when the suspect plows over a spike strip set up by two Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers. And after a brief foot chase, the suspect is later arrested by both parties, though he is turned over to the Metropolitan Police.
The driver later admitted to smoking marijuana when he freaked and saw one of the tribal officers. The cops, however, claim that all he would have gotten was a citation had he chosen not to run.
Janus later posted his video feed of the chase and subsequent arrest to his blog for all to see in hopes of educating the public on policing and other matters. To finish it up, Janus puts a description in for his video which says the following:
“Remember - what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! In Sin City, you may earn a jackpot, but your pot will be jacked if you make the wrong decision. These officers made a joint collaboration and earned a jackpot of their own!”~~~~~Janus belongs to
