Nelson is a respectable, yet polarizing figure of the team to the fans and media, playing Left Field since being traded to the team in 2018 at the age of 25. His hitting power is extremely volatile, constantly dipping between very hot streaks and ice-cold streaks, and he cannot hit for contact. Making matters worse, his strikeout rate is well over 35%, much too high for a big leaguer. He makes up for it, however, with plus-fielding skills and a very-high ceiling for power and pull-hitting. To his benefit, his batting average has slowly increased since he was traded, jumping from .183 in his first season to nearly .250 by his age 29 season, even being given his first all-star appearance and four consecutive gold gloves.
Nelson is probably the most respectable, nice, and approachable ballplayer you could ever meet. On the field, Nelson wastes no time talking to fans between innings, before and after games, and even having fun with hecklers who make fun of his slightly-negative hitting profile. He also doesn’t cause a ruckus in the dugout, preferring to save any talk for the clubhouse, but is appreciative of the pranks despite not taking part. He’s always on the railing watching the game from there. However, that is not to say, in private, he can be a mess. If he’s pushed to his limits, or someone tries to downtrod him, he will get defensive. It can be violent and very ugly, though he’s never sent anyone to the hospital but can be given his stature. He also has a tendency to cry a lot, especially after a big loss or a bad day. Outside the field, that messy personality is on display a little more frequently than during a game, but he still keeps it at bay to where he can function. He’s also a do-gooder for his community, helping out in whatever way he can for the city that has given him a great opportunity.
His personality makes him get along well with Sasu and Clay, but sometimes at-odds with Christian. While he does respect Christian enough and can tolerate his verbal abuse, it can be overwhelming for him and the two have physically fought before. That is, thankfully, a rare occurrence. For others, he is lukewarm or does not really speak to them. He holds a fragile sense of security inside himself, and his internal struggles manifest in severe crying fits and explosive releases of rage, though this is mainly done in extremely private settings save for some incidents. Either way, he loves playing the game, he loves the fans, and he wants to make his mark.
Unfortunately, over the offseason, Nelson lost his father, Nelson Sr., after being stricken by cardiac arrest unexpectedly around New Year’s Eve. Sr., who was a former U.S. Marine, had encouraged his son his entire life and been his biggest supporter. His death, however, had left Nelson in shambles privately, where he now spends most of his off-time secluded and drinking his pain away, starting to affect his ability to play. His hope is that the upcoming season will allow him to heal from his father’s death, but he is sinking rather quickly. He can be very bitter and unpleasant to be around while drunk, sobbing uncontrollably most of the time. While not violent, he can shout endlessly and rant without cause.
