Finally got around to updating Vex's reference sheet. I ended up doing a lot of research to make sure I really emphasized his wolfy traits, and feel like my wolf anatomy has improved along the way. Even when using a cartoony style, it's still fun and challenging to capture the unique physical traits of the animal you're drawing.
Character Profile
Name: Vex
Species: Mid content wolfdog. Roughly 55% gray wolf and 45% Siberian husky.
Sex: Male
Height: 27 inches at the shoulder. Slightly smaller than an average male wolf.
Build: Should be indistinguishable from a pure gray wolf. He has long legs, a narrow chest, a straight back, and "cow-hocked" rear legs.
Distinct Features: Overhanging hair tuft, large paws with long toes, a bushy tail which ends roughly at his hock, and thick fur around his neck and shoulders. Ears are rounded (not pointy) and thickly-furred on the inside and outside. His tail usually hangs low - not high up or curly.
Alternate Form: Vampire
Personality
Positive Traits: Intelligent, kind, passionate, empathetic, open-minded, loyal, adaptable, observant, determined, honest, funny, and level-headed.
Negative Traits: Self-conscious, insecure, worrisome, hypersensitive to criticism, can be easily frustrated, prone to catastrophic thinking, pessimistic, private, socially anxious, and cares too much what other people think.
Other Notes
-The lighter lines are a stylistic choice I'm trying out, and are not an essential part of Vex's design. It's mostly just to make everything easier to see.
-Vex isn't the result of a straight wolf x dog pairing. His parents and grandparents were all wolfdogs, and I imagine he would be considered an F3 or F4 based on his ancestry.
-Vex was born almost all black, but phased into his permanent colors and markings by the time he was the equivalent of a five or six year old child. Unlike a pure wolf, his colors do not change at all after this point.
-Vex is on the same shedding schedule as a wolf. He sheds once a year, and typically looks like a wreck during the transition period.
-Despite what you might think, Vex's eyes come from his wolf side, not his husky side. His eyes are actually gray, but often appear bluish because of the way they reflect light. They can range in color from stone-gray, to bright blue, to pale green, but are usually a mix of all three. This is not too far off from an actual mutation sometimes (albeit rarely) seen in wolves.
-If drawn realistically, his eyes would be wolf-like - almond-shaped, slanted, and lined thickly in black.
No critique desired. Please respect that.
