I've recently been having some fun translating the 'Cats' musical characters into cartoon cats, and it's turned into a challenging exercise in character design. I'm basing my designs on the 1998 recording, so this is meant to be Tugger as played by John Partridge. I decided to make him a male tortoiseshell (very rare but does occur from time to time) and tried to translate things like the gloves and belt into markings, but keep them simple enough to be used in animation. Part of the design process has involved picking a breed to base a character on, and in this case it was a Maine coon. This musical has always been one of my favorites, and I thought it was time to share some fanart here. I would love to do an animatic for some of the songs at some point, just to prove that you can make a Cats 'movie' without it turning into a Lovecraftian horror show (looking at you, 2019 Cats).
