On the night of May 10th, Earth was blasted by the strongest solar storm in decades. Auroras were seen across the globe, dazzling millions of people. They were visible as far south as the Caribbean, Hawaii, Africa, and even South America.
This photo is from near my backyard in Las Vegas, with brilliant red and magenta pillars of Northern Lights shining in the sky. Even a little green and yellow, although washed-out by Light Pollution from the city.

Its fantastic! And quite rare. Pink/Red auroras occur only during major solar storms. They are caused by Oxygen atoms at 250+ km altitude, being ionized like a neon light. Oxygen also produces the more common green colors at around 60-100km. Nitrogen produces Purple, Yellow, and Blue at varying altitudes.
to the naked eye, the color was more of a deep crimson/blood red, and much more washed out and faint than on camera.
