Oh it's very possible someway somehow, (especially in the anime)
There was one where all but one of the main characters were turned into their favorite monster cards, and controlled by the remainder,
Later in we're introduced to "shadow games", and whoever loses would go into the shadow realm (which is kinda like purgatory), the worst by far would be in "battle city" finals, where whenever a duelists loses life points (that's the whole point, get them to zero) a piece of their host will be lost to the shadows.
