A very interesting and pleasant order in terms of work.
This is the first time I've ever painted bird characters in my memory.

I wouldn't say less expressive, it more so lacked a sense of place, which usually isn't an issue but because of your great lighting, it made the background feel empty and the characters somewhat out of place.
Your implementation of the new background beautifully works in tandem with what you've already drawn, amplifying the qualities, like the lighting, making it feel more grounded or as you put it, more expressive.
