Alex the Axolotl had been warned again and again by several different people, but he decided to ignore it all and go out to this rumored ‘sacred meadow’ in the woods. It was supposedly a consecrated ground reserved for only the most untouched of nature, and anyone who tried to venture out there to see it or cut it down was never heard from again.
Of course, Alex was a moronic TF Protagonist so he was going out there.
He wore a pretty bog-standard hiking outfit on his excursion, as well as taking along a backpack full of water and some snacks in case he got thirsty or hungry.
The forest itself was rather pretty, despite it having clearly seen better days. The trees were all worn down with time, and some were even dead and fallen over, and the ground was blanketed with dead leaves, pinestraw, bark segments, etc. The forest still had a grandness to it that was extenuated by its age. Alex could only wonder what the meadow looked like if the forest on its own was this captivating.
It took Alex several snack and drink breaks, but soon the dead leaves and splintered trees of the forest began to transition into lush, green grass, and revitalized, leafy trees. Alex became giddy with the thought that he was finally reaching the meadow. His tail began to swing back and forth eagerly at the thought.
And soon enough, the sight of the meadow would finally rear its head. The grass was even greener and lusher, beautiful flowers of all different colors were dusted all over the area, and in the center, rested a large pond with crystal clear waters, flowing from a small waterfall and flowing gently over pristine rocks that stood tall out of the water.
Alex smiled widely and breathed in deep breath of the fresh air. He then slipped off his backpack and set it down next to a large, flat rock, then sat down on said rock, watching the meadow happily, seeing as the butterflies and dragonflies flew around from place to place. (There were also mosquitos there but nobody likes those so we won’t elaborate.)
After chilling out at the meadow for a while longer, Alex decided it was probably time to go home. Boy he couldn’t wait to see the looks on the faces of all those crazy people who said he’d never return!
But as he went to snag his backpack up, Alex began to feel…off…
His hand slowly edged away from the backpack as he looked back to the meadow’s lake…It looked so refreshing, so relaxing, so…homely. Alex was beginning to feel like this meadow WAS his home…
Alex then shook his head rapidly and clutched it with his left hand, trying to talk himself down from the intrusive thoughts popping up in his head. He tried to remind himself of who he was…who his friends were, and where he actually lived. Alex went to grab his backpack again, but he just couldn’t bring himself to.
Alex stepped back towards the water and looked at his reflection in the mirror…no matter how hard he tried to fight off the thoughts, they were too strong, and they began to force out every other thought in his head…he just looked so…unnatural.
He looked down at himself…he stood fully upright on two legs…he wore clothing, he spoke and walk like a human…hell, he even had human hair at the top of his head. Alex looked at his hands, the human-like anatomy of them was so alien to him…He wasn’t a human! He was an axolotl! He didn’t need all these extra embellishments! All he needed was the meadow, it would provide him with all he needed to survive, including the form that was perfect for it.
The meadow’s magic got to work, starting with Alex’s clothing. First causing the laces of his hiking boots to all snap in half, then causing the boots themselves to snap in half. Alex stepped away from the scraps and smiled as he felt the grass under his feet, just as intended by nature.
The magic then went to Alex’s shirt, tearing it half and throwing it off of Alex, allowing the cool wind to grace his scaly skin. Alex chuckled as he watched the human aspects of him be scrubbed away…
The magic then went to Alex’s final piece of clothing, his pants. It unbuttoned and unzipped them, then drug them all the way down his legs, where Alex stepped right out of them. After that, all of the clothing that lay on the ground disintegrated.
Alex then walked into the pond, which went up to his ankles. However, this wouldn’t be for long, as Alex found himself standing on tip-toes as his leg structure changed to being digitigrade. His legs curved inwards below his knees. Overall, he’d been inadvertently made taller by this latest shift. Once that was done, Alex’s human hair began to fall out in clumps, disintegrating into nothing in the air, followed by his feathery gills growing in size.
Alex’s thumbs and index fingers began to twitch afterwards. He smiled widely as he realized what was coming next.
Alex’s thumbs shrunk and shrunk until they ceased to exist, followed by his index fingers. His hands then lengthened, and his remaining fingers grew into pointed toes, and webbing grew between each toe. Alex then found himself lowering down to all fours, and when his front feet touched the bottom of the pond, his arms began to change in structure to become another set of legs.
Alex’s body then began to shrink. Alex’s joy only grew as he felt himself be submerged in the pure waters of the meadow. He let out a loud squeak of happiness as the water lapped over his back, and soon enough, he had shrunk so much that he was completely sunk into the water. From then, his memories began to grow more and more distant, more and more foggy, until they were gone from his mind completely…Alex soon lost the ability to speak and think entirely, and all that was left was a simple Axolotl, swimming around joyfully in the pond of the Sacred Meadow…
The areas where the grass had been trampled by the former intuder’s boots smoothed back over, and the rock -which had been dirtied by the intruder sitting on it-, was dusted off by a breath of fresh, cool wind.
And now that the intruder’s presence was completely erased…the meadow was ready to welcome home its new resident. A lovely, feral, untouched axolotl. Right where it should be, without the extra embellishments.
