“I was going to wait to give you this, but I think now’s better then ever.”
He pulled out a small, flat, badly-wrapped package and gestured for Dot to come over. He handed it to her, and she tore off the wrapping, before holding up the contents.
A pair of small overalls.
She looked confused, and about as thrilled as most kids would when receiving clothes. But Flik was unbothered. That wasn’t the real surprise.
“How would you like to be my assistant around here, sweetpea? You know, help me build stuff?”
And then a small purple missile latched onto his legs.
“YEAH! YEAH YEAH YEAH! LET’S BUILD, LET’S BUILD!” She chirped excitedly, her face beaming.
Flik had to admit he was impressed by how she could simultaneously grip his legs that tightly, and jump up and down. Talented little squirt, that Dot.
She finally let go when she turned to the workbench and began running towards it, before Flik scooped her up.
“Whoa there, kiddo. If you’re going to be an inventor too, you've got to look the part.” He smiled, and she giggled, shaking in his grip with excitement.
“I’m going be a real maker! A real maker!” She squealed.
Flik reached down and scooped up the dropped overalls, before standing his little assistant on the couch. It was hard to say which of the two were happier - Dot, for getting to be an inventor too, or Flik, for seeing her so happy again.

Getting the princess changed was… more challenging than Flik had anticipated.
For one, it was impossible to get her to stay still. More than once he had to pick her back up and put her back on the couch, and even then, she was extremely wiggly, all too eager to get started. Enthusiasm is great, except when you’re trying to fit a tiny arm through a far-too-large sleeve.
And that wiggling would have been bad enough if her new clothes actually fit. Flik had no idea what size to get her, and decided that it was better to have too much than too little, getting something he knew would be a bit big on her.
The end result was that he bought her a pair of overalls that would have comfortably fit on a child twice her age. They were hilariously massive on her, but that was nothing compared to the shirt. He hadn’t gotten her one of those, so he had to make do with one of the preciously-rare clean(ish) shirts he had in here. On her, the gray t-shirt was longer than her dress had been.
But, they made it work. The straps on the overalls had to be tightened all the way, the shirt bunched up absolutely everywhere, and her outfit consisted of more twine than most people wore on the daily, but she was dressed.
She looked… frankly ridiculous. Like a lumpy gray sack stuffed in a pair of overalls, with little limbs and a head sticking out at odd angles.
And she couldn’t be happier.
“I’m a real maker now!” She squealed, bouncing up and down.
“Do I look like it, F’ik?” She beamed up at him.
“It’s…” he struggled to find the words. “...A start, sweetpea. Now, let’s get to work,”
He sat down at the workbench, grabbing a blueprint and a tray of parts. He lifted his little assistant up and plopped her on his lap, and the two began their work.
