Scottish Knight, Siege of Orleans 1429
Another instalment of military history. Here we see Duncan as a knight in French service, kitted out in armour of the early 15th century. He wears the livery of Archibald Douglas, 4th Earl of Douglas and Duke of Touraine. The Great Scottish Army in France played a key role in the later stages of the 100 Year's War, winning a key victory at Bauge in 1421 before being destroyed at the Battle of Verneuil in 1424, where the Earl of Douglas was slain.
Despite this setback, Scottish knights and men-at-arms continued to provide loyal service to the Kings of France, and many would join Joan of Arc in her campaign to retake Orleans from Anglo-Burgundian occupation. As late as 1449, the city of Orleans provided pensions for Scottish veterans who had supported the Maid in her famous victory.
Here we see Donnchadh Na Guinnich, known in French as Duncan Le Gunn, acting as a standard bearer in Joan of Arc's army. Though a Highlander by birth, service in France has granted him access to the most modern plate armour, which he wears beneath the livery of the Earls of Douglas, in whose service he was originally commissioned. While the Earl of Douglas is dead, Duncan continues to fight in his name, and is in the process of rallying the French infantry for another assault on the town walls.

Thanks! I've actually had the privilege of sleeping in an old castle that overlooks one of Joan of Arc's victories, at Meung-sur-Loire. The French Army still has a march, "Marche des Soldats De Robert Bruce", that takes its tune from an old Scottish air, in memory of the Scots who fought alongside the Maid. It is traditionally played by the French Navy's bagad, the Breton equivalent of a pipe band.
