The deer in Scottish folklore are known as the Witch Mothers cattle and they are protected by her. During the winter months she hurries the deer high up into the mountains away from the hunters. And when man does want to take a deer for their meat and hides they have to make a deal with the Witch Mother or her maids the Green Ladies. Offerings must be made and only the barren or lazy of heart can be taken.
