Emma arriving overseas via dirigible at the colonial fort-town. For various reasons explained in the story her people developed balloon, blimp, and dirigible travel before large ocean-going ships.
i knew i was going to continue to refine her design, but this also felt like Emma officially arriving to take part in this story...
but i never finished the upper right side of the pic - so i just mirrored it in the comp. Tones were also done in the comp.

Yes and no.
Some drawings i ink traditionally, some by hand in the computed, and sometimes i use my own repeating patterns of cross-hatching, etc in the computer.
This drawing is mostly traditional, but there were some hand-drawn finishes in the comp, and patterns applied in the comp such as the pattern or her coat, the wood-grain, etc.

i use a number of programs, cuz each does some stuff better than the others:
PainterX simulates real media - so for painting, inking, sketching, airbrushing, smudge and smooth
PaintshopPro7 (old program) for editing, adjusting colours, patterns, fx
Photoshop LE for gradients, gradient maps, displacement maps, fx, some brush work, flat colours
PhotoshopLE cames free with my Wacom tablet. i think the current Wacom "Bamboo" tablets still come with the current version and if you're going to do digital art, colouring, etc, you'll want a tablet the basic ones are aroung 150$ US or so, maybe less?
And the good news is that there is a free program that does most of this (just not quite as well) called "the Gimp" (silly name, but great program - i use it as well). It's made by folks into the "freeware" movement, so there's no ads, tracking, malware, viruses etc about it. Here's their homepage:

There are lots of tutorials on line (such as at deviantArt) to help get you started. :)
