The dragon father finally landed on a hill that stood in front of a hill that lead to a magnificent view of a great human city, with his daughter landing as well, next to him. The gleaming buildings were a beautiful, attractive vision to her, but her father instead was watching them with infinite sadness.
"Can we go dad?"
"No, it would be too dangerous" the father said, lowering his head to muzzle the dragonlet "they may kill us if we come to a human settlement."
"Oh" she said as well. They were so shining in the daylight... "Won't they still see us if we stay here?"
"Here is safe" the dragon explained to her "they would probably think we're something else. They don't know we're still around."
The dragon turned his head away from his offspring, posing the eyes again at the tall constructions the humans had made. "However, I brought you because I felt it right to let you know about this place."
"What for, if we can't go there?"
The dragon closed his eyes, like lost in memories. "It was my and your ancestors' home. It was our home."
"We lived here? But you said..."
"They didn't use to be here" he explained "this used to be just like where we live now. A big, great land where all dragons could live and hunt and sleep..." he paused. "...but that was long ago.
"Humans, even though they're smaller than us, are very powerful. What they lack in their body they compensate it with their mind. But...the more power you get, the more hungry for it you become. We dragons discovered it at our expense, when we were hunted by the human themselves and realized our manifestations of power had turned against us. Now it's their turn to discover it."
The dragonlet was now curious to know more about them. "What happened?"
"They came one night" the dragon's voice was broken with emotion "they raided the land, killed several of us and forced the rest to go away, and in the end they established their own community. All over the world, they have done this. This is why we now live in the mountains: there, it is much more difficult for them to create these buildings."
The dragonlet wasn't looking anymore at the city with admiration. Instead, a profound indignation now filled her little dragon heart. "Oh, you must really hate them!"
The dragon mitted a short laugh. "Actually, I don't."
Her daughter didn't expect this. "Why? They have done so many bad things to us!"
"See, humans are in some aspects similar to us, or what we once were" he said "they look for power...and obtain it. One day, they'll fall just like we did. I'm sure that we'll both be still alive, when it happens. They may be then looking for us. We swore, when that day comes, to help them, because we know what means to lose the power you accumulated. And we'll make sure that neither them, nor us, will ever have to hide from the rest of the world."
The dragonlet watched him, confused. "I don't understand..."
Her father patted her with a wing. "One day you will understand. Now let's go back to our cave. We can't be late to our annual clan meeting."
The two dragons gave a last look of the city, their ancient home, and soared up into the polluted sky.
