The idea is that she halts the duplication process in the middle of activating it, causing her to duplicate partially inside of herself, rather than completely outside of herself. This makes her muscles, bones and tissues thicker and denser (making her stronger and tougher). However, this is not how her powers were designed to operate, and requires constant concentration on her part to make it work (like flexing a muscle). If she loses focus, the halted process continues and she splits completely apart
