1. It makes it clear that Kathy is 100% in charge.

(shakes her head) I truly feel for Fred, he tries so much to break though the programming of life. It took me decades to accept what I am without shame and take my first girl. (Yeah I was still a teenager, in a very conservative part of town (so to speak.) But we was feminists. Yeah, no man gonna-a tell us we can't be together.
But in the course of life men and women would come my way, and society got their heads outta their asses (to a point, tell that to some republications) Fred needs to travel on and learn, and Kathy should be the one to guide him...especially with a good right hook.
