Hello.
Here is some progress with Joseph. :)
I am not very good at drawing hats/headgear. Growing up, I personally avoided drawing characters/outfits with hats because it was hard for me to visualize those objects on heads. What you see here literally took me some time to get right lol.
Because Joseph is Japanese-Hawaiian, I took inspiration from both American and Japanese firefighting gear, creating a fusion of the two. :)
American firefighter helmets have a signature crest on the front, a more oval-shaped brim that somewhat covers the neck, and multiple ridges on the head-part. Japanese firefighter helmets have a smaller crest, tend to be white (or gray etc.), have a singular ridge, and have a long shroud of fabric (that I am assuming is the same material as their coats) to protect the neck and head in a wrap-around fashion. If I remember my history correctly, the modern form is actually a remnant of older-style Japanese firefighter gear from the Edo period (~1600 to ~1860). Edo firemen wore heavy layers of cotton that was soaked with water before delving into the flames. The thick layers kept the water to protect the firefighter (as water requires a lot of energy to heat, which is why water douses flames), and the padding doubled as cushioning for falling debris and contact.
A similar history for forms changing with the times in Western fashion is the Early Modern cravat evolving into the tie. :)
I made a palette of some headshots to show some ideas that I have for the colors. I'm leaning more towards B and D.
Also, his flashlight now has a strap.
I like the black helmet because it keeps it in-line with the palette that I have so far. I do, however, like the red helmet for its bold color.
I hate being indecisive lol.
