Possibly to mitigate your astonishment - I did cheat. The background is six Photoshop layers with masks of a tiled hatching pattern at different angles.

I'm fairly sure I could reproduce it on paper, but it would be a day of my life and a portion of my sanity that I'm not currently willing to part with. (Perhaps if I intended to sell the original. I don't know.)

Lovely! Simple, straightforward linework and shading. And i don't care if you cheated on the background, it looks really good. Really like the phases of the moon.
