Nigel has seer powers... And by the looks of it, he has had them after Luna (The Tree of Life) had her talk with his family when she rejected him.
...However, this means that Luna not taking in Nigel was the reason Nigel turned out this way. Nobody else alive as we know it in the story currently, has the gift/curse of future sight, or any way of understanding it, meaning that Luna leaving Nigel with his rather horrid family (Outside of Toby), and then later to fend for himself, only made things worse.
Yeah, turns out leaving a Kid with Future sight without any way of training them or putting them in with people who cannot understand the whole thing, would turn them into a rather foul tempered individual... And the final knife twist for any degree of respect Nigel had for Luna, was her rendering him blind... Right after she basically admitted that the whole reason she did not accept him those two times, was something absurdly simple to hammer out of him.
Seriously, leave him with young Miralle, Leo and Chilli for a week, and they'd have gotten that little kink smacked out of him... Very likely to be literal in the case of Leo... Also, I can picture Young Nigel having to put up with kid Miralle and Leo having one of their usual fights and him having to either run away from their "big ball o' violence" chasing him, or Nigel frantically chasing said "Big Ball o' Violence" to try and get them to knock it off... Ah, to imagine "What could have been"...
...And to make it worse, Leo does not know it, but his attitude is EXACTLY like Nigel's parents. The only thing stopping him from being a carbon copy of them in Leopard form is the fact that he actually cares about the citizenry, rather than how Nigel's parents saw those citizens as "Serfs" or "Plebians".
Remember, Nigel and Toby's parents kept Toby and Nigel away from the Citizenry, an attitude of Elites who view "Commoners" as "disposable"... That is literally the one difference between Leopold and Nigel's parents.

Ignoring the first part, seeing as my so-called "Copied Comment" was because it was intended to answer the comment, and I found it was better as a Standalone, I will focus on the more important part.
Luna admitted to her advisor shortly after Miralle's team.left that her future sight had become Murky, which was why so many of her decisions were so weird and irrational. Luna had become so dangerously reliant on her future sight that she has no real clue on properly making a decision without it. (I.e, blinding Nigel as a "Lesson"? Her tearful breakdown after Miralle left implies it was a spar of the moment thing.)
...And she seems to understand that if they come back from this adventure, they may end up hating her because of what they may find on their journey...
...Luna actually admitted she could handle the hate as long as her baby girl comes home... But she was still frightened of Miralle's Scorn as well.

Well Vazilior, looks like I kind of get vindicated. Nigel has Future Sight abilities... And by the looks of it, he has had them after Luna (The Tree of Life) had her talk with his family when she rejected him at a young age...
...However, this means that Luna not taking in Nigel was the reason Nigel turned out this way. Nobody else alive as we know it in the story currently (the keyword here being "Currently", as we have yet to see anyone else have such an ability), has the gift/curse of future sight, or any way of understanding how horrible the visions are, meaning that Luna leaving Nigel with his rather horrid family (Outside of Toby), and then later to fend for himself, without any way of understanding his powers, only made things worse.
Yeah, turns out leaving a Kid with Future sight without any way of training them or putting them in with people who can understand the whole thing, would turn them into a rather foul tempered and sour individual... And the final knife twist for any degree of respect Nigel had for Luna, was her rendering him blind... Right after she basically admitted that the whole reason she did not accept him those two times, was something absurdly simple to hammer out of him. (I mean, his weak "That's it?", basically tells us that it was something so absurdly easy to teach out of him.)
Seriously, leave him with young Miralle, Leo and Chilli for a week (Especially with their antics), and they'd have gotten that little kink smacked out of him... Very likely to be literal in the case of Leo... Also, I can picture Young Nigel having to put up with kid Miralle and Leo having one of their usual fights and Nigel having to either run away from their "big ball o' violence" chasing him, or Nigel frantically chasing said "Big Ball o' Violence" to try and get them to knock it off... Ah, to imagine "What could have been". (Heh, reminds me of Dr Stone with Tsukasa and Senku, especially the part where Tsukasa lamented on "What could have been"...)

Remember, Nigel and Toby's parents kept Toby and Nigel away from the Citizenry, an attitude of Elites who view "Commoners" as "disposable", while Leo lets his actions speak for themselves with the Citizens rather than his (rather crass) words... That is literally the one difference between Leopold and Nigel's parents.

Nigel's rant at Luna before he went blind had him blurt out about his nightmares... Implying he had them right after he was rejected by Luna the first time.
Around that time, Luna seemed to start having her Future sight turn murky, which she admitted to her advisor after Miralle's team left.

Hmmm interesting. I doubt she knew about him having them back then or she wouldn't have fucked up as bad as she did at that moment with him.
Yes I remember that part. But that doesn't explain why he has them she's definitely got more power and stuff than he does obviously in more ways than one and he only ever trained to be a warrior not some Mystic so it's very interesting he has a a connection somehow why she is losing hers
The person they're going to meet may explain it hopefully.

...I just realised that Nigel is rather relaxed around Tristan (Drat, just realized I keep mispelling his name), as in, rather than trying to shake off Tristan or get snappy at him, he actually treats him as if he were a friend.
...Heh, ironic... I just realized that had Luna taken in either Tristan or Nigel back then, the two could have actually helped each other deal with their flaws that Luna couldn't apparently solve herself... Tristan would have helped Nigel understand how important it would have been to actually help people, while Nigel would have basically helped Tristan Grow a Spine.
It isn't even a matter of "Could", but "Would".
...I just pictured a piece of Luna's reasoning screaming at her from inside a Cage to "NOOOO!!! Take Tristan with you before it is too late!!!", all while Rah J'an is poking the Cage with a Stick and telling it to "Shut your cakehole already! What are you screaming about anyway?!"
