Don't remember where I saw it, but one picture awhile ago had this sort of rubber liner the birds could put over the edge of their beaks thus giving them a sort of synthetic lip. Still had to be careful though of course but was an interesting solution. But then I'll always opt for at l east a little bit of 'toon physics' if it works for a given setting.
