When I was in college (the first time around -- mid 1970s) I used to buy old used ones at flea markets and tag sales, clean, tune and replace the ribbon and sell 'em to my classmates. There was always at least one professor who required typewritten reports.
When I went back in 1989, one professor said she wouldn't accept any reports printed on dot-matrix machines. Fortunately, I worked writing and maintaining print programs. Laser printer? Right here...
