Final Lap
A Thursday Prompt story

Prompt: circuit
The pit crew held up a sign as he blew past them, and Johnny grinned. One lap to go, and he was in the lead.
Now to make certain that he kept that lead for a short while longer.
His speed hadn’t changed over the past few laps, and his closest opponent was fairly far – what?
Johnny couldn’t believe it. His opponent was starting to gain on him.
How had he found the resources to accelerate? Johnny briefly considered the question, and just as quickly dismissed it. It didn’t matter how fast his opponents went, so long as he went faster.
Half a lap to go, and the opponent drew nearly neck and neck alongside Johnny. A quarter-lap to go, and the opponent nosed ahead just a little.
Tactics were vital at this stage.
Johnny gauged that the moment was right, put on a final burst that strained him almost to the breaking point . . . and he crossed the finish line just in advance of the opponent!

“Doctor?”
The physicist looked up from the detector’s screen as the whorls and streaks from the collision faded away. The beagle moved his glasses slightly up his muzzle and grinned at his assistant. “Yes, Harvey?”
The rabbit said, “You do know that the ion beam’s coherent.”
“Of course.”
“So why cheer on one particular particle?”
The beagle grinned. “All work and no play, Harv. And I love NASCAR.”
