Lore time: So long story short, this gray character is actually not a very specific species. It's more so an illusion of specific repressed memories. Moreso, repressed memories of past relationships the character himself has been in.

Usually, these illusions happen when memories/emotions are repressed after a certain amount of time. Typically, they are triggered by a series of events or when he comes across certain memories.

In this case, the gray illusion is the result of him forcing himself to forget his past two relationships. Even though, canonically, he's only ever had 2. The first one ended on good terms, yet he feels like he regrets what he's said. The second relationship ended rather ugly. Let's just say for disclose.

This is pretty much the result of repressing all the negative emotions for an extended amount of time. Usually, they take any form they want, but this one chose to be a house cat.

Even though they are conceived through negative emotions, Their purpose is to comfort those who had fallen on hard times emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically. Though, They usually come around if people believe in their existence. In Paws' case, he can clearly see them.
