“Kip? When did you know you loved me? Not just lusted after me, but loved me?”
The question seemed to come out of nowhere. Kip hadn’t really talked about it before. It seemed a bit like a moot point, considering they had been intimate shortly after they met, but it was still a pointed question. When did lust turn to fondness. Kip thought for a good, long while before gently tugging the fox’s head into his lap.
“Well, it was a bit after you came to my apartment. Remember a few weeks after the hallway rendezvous, you said your birthday had just passed and I said mine was coming up?”
Khopesh looked up at his mate, giving a slight nod. “We ended up similar to this, I remember. Watching the Lord of the Rings extended trilogy, since you wanted to watch it per your annual need, and I hadn’t seen it for years.”
“That’s right! That was over a long weekend, and you ended up being a lot better at taking care of yourself by then, too. Cooking for me, making me feel valued as well. I felt so embarrassed at the time, mouthing and following along with the script, and you were looking at me, and I apologized.”
“I said, ‘I find it endearing.’ Because I did. I still do. You were expressing your love for something ‘nerdy’, but meaningful. It took me many more months before I opened up in a similar manner.”
Kip leaned and gave Khopesh a kiss before running his squirrely fingers through his partner’s hair. “I still don’t necessarily understand your nerdy loves, but I love seeing your eyes light up talking about them. Rambling about them. I end up learning about history from you, too, and you try to appease me with those facts. It’s adorable!”
Khopesh shifted a bit, closing his eyes, getting comfortable. “So, you fell in love with me just because I was indulging your nerdy past-times and had some chili cooking?”
Kip gave a hum, thinking slightly. “No, not quite. What I felt then, with your head in my lap, my script-reading with the movie, the smells of food in the air… It felt like home. It felt safe.”
Khopesh shifted a little bit, opening an eye up to his mate. “That’s kind of how I feel love should be. It’s not about grand gestures, being a potential public nuisance, making you feel indebted to me, or any of that. It’s about showing that… I embrace your quirks, and I want to make you feel secure. Your little tics, well, they don’t bother me. Some are just downright heart-melting, honestly. Like your laugh.”
Kip blushed a bit at the compliment, tracing his finger along Khopesh’s ear. “Well, that’s how I fell in love with you. You weren’t trying to get anything out of me. You were trying to make me feel safe, and it worked. Plus, I mean, your huge cock is a bonus.”
Khopesh laughed and leaned up, kissing Kip for a long, deep moment. “I love you so much, my dearheart. Home is wherever I’m with you.”
