Newly acquired female red tail boa. Yes, I know what I'm getting myself into. :P She won't be meeting up with my male rtb anytime soon XD; Her name is Eidolon. No, not like from FF or d&d, like from the dictionary definition :P I figured it would match well with my boy, Ghostbuster :P
She is about 5' long or more. Former owner must have fed her live rats as she has a scar on her snout. I'll be taking her to the vet to make sure it's not infected or causing her any trouble, she has a whistle when she breathes which could be RI or just scar tissue in her nasal cavity. OR, she could just be about to shed. She handles well and is very calm and doesn't mind her face being touched. I will be setting up her tank later today; it's a 2x6x1 ft. tank I've had for years and didn't know what to do with it. Gotta get locks for the lid, because this girl is STRONG :P

6 foot? That's one freaking hell of a long tank. I keep Argentine Tegus and I had to custom the goddamned thing because I couldn't find anyone who sold tanks over 5 foot when I needed like, 7 foot. Maybe the shops around here are just shit, I dunno. Anything around or over 5' tends to be like, wooden vivs with sliders. : /
You just buy that tank straight from the shop, or did you order it through to your house or something?

7 feet (or) 8 feet by 4 feet is the generally argued floor size for a Tegu enclosure. Trying to upload images/videos of your tegu in anything smaller results in major butthurt online in reptile circles.
Although I do agree with you about the snake thing. Right now I keep arboreals and they just curl up and stay in one corner of what is a pretty big arboreal tank, kindof a waste. But I still prefer that they have room to 'stretch out', I guess.

So pretty! I wish I had the space for big snakes. :C All I have space for are my corns.
Is 6' thing you have a fish tank or a custom viv or something? If I ever had a boa, I'd only keep it in a custom viv... I don't trust screen lids with those little lock things that you snap into place. I don't trust those with any snakes, really. I use the Zilla cages for my guys.

It was a fish tank yeah... I currently have several massive water jugs on boards on top of the lid, I got thick plastic covers that I want to put actual locking locks on so no one can get into her. The house I'm living in currently has a lot of people and kids going in and out, and I'm having to keep her in the living room, so I don't want any sneaky little kid hands trying to touch her! I'm weird about other people handling my snakes as is, but especially so if it could asphyxiate them :P

that may not be the case, many snakes are just compulsively rubbing on the tank top
if that wound opens up again you might want to take some sandpaper to any abrasive surfaces or get a top with fine mesh
also scars on the tail are usually not prey bites either, but burns from excessive heat sources (my old common boa came with just such a burn from direct contact with a hot rock)

Upon close inspection they look very much like a rat bite because you can see several pinholes of scarring in the shape of a teeth. It could have even been a small dog or another snake, but I feel pretty sure there's no way she could have caused these sorts of wounds on herself.
Actually, nose rubbing almost always happens with wild caught snakes or high energy snakes being kept in small enclosures with many see-through sides. Often times this behavior can be stopped with a very large enclosure and blacking out all but one of the sides. And adding many hides.
that reminds me, the worst i'd seen was at the daytona show several years ago
one of the breeders had a borneo bateater and it was even in a professional vision cage, but it still was non-stop rubbing
(my fav caging is neodesha, no one was happier than me they started making them again )
there were streaks of blood all over the glass as if it had been at it for some time
in that case because only one side of those kind of tanks are transparent
with bateaters being one of those designer hybrids not found in nature
and the well-known breeder being one of upstanding reputation
all i could think was this was new behavior brought on by the show itself
the low hum of crowds and PA systems was just too much vibration to deal with
i guess it really was a disturbing sight to still recall 5-6 years after the fact

I admire you for being able to take care of so many interesting creatures. It makes me unbelievably happy to know that you take so much time to do research and give your love and care to the little wonders of nature that a lot of people don't appreciate enough. Not this beautiful lady per se, but most of your pets/specimens in general. :)
