I was never a huge fanficcer, but I did a handful, most often deadfics (no, not a fic where everyone dies, a multi-installment fanfic that get cancelled halfway trough because I spota shiny object), this is one of the only ones I could locate, and since I have no shame, I might as well post it.
Stupid Cupid, Episode 1. - That Sort of Person
by: Owlor
Pairing: Gadget/Tammy
Note: This story takes place after the events of “Adventures in Squirrelsitting”. Characters belong to Disney.
It was still very late at night, and the air had a very curious smell to it. It was the smell of early risers, of night owls and all-nighters. Gadget could almost taste it in the wind as the Rangerplane flied daintily cross the sky. The backseat was a pile of sleep, Monterey had his arm around Binky, and she did not seem to take any notice of his deep rumbling snores. Dale had his head on Chips shoulder and Chip slept soundly with his arms crossed like a teacher scolding a student. Both was still wearing jewels, make-up and what little remained of their torn and ragged cocktail-dresses. Zipper was already in the Ranger headquarters, sleeping soundly in his little bed. Apart from Gadget, the only one awake was Tammy, too excited to sleep. Gadget couldn’t help smiling as she watched Tammy’s futile attempts at dozing off.
“Not easy to sleep after an adventure like this, isn’t it?”, Gadget said softly
Tammy looked up, “yeah, I bet it’s this kind of stuff you do all the time”, she said with a voice somewhere in between ‘I’m so jealous’ and ‘boy am I glad I’m not you’.
“Actually, I spend most of my days in the workshop, there’s always something that needs to be repaired, but it’s these kinds of nights that makes me happy to be a Rescue Ranger”.
For a moment there was complete silence as Gadget seemed to shine brighter than the stars. She took in the night, every aspect of it, in one content breath. Tammy smiled, “I can see why Chipper likes you”.
“You think he does?”, Gadget said, “well, he is cute for a chipmunk…”
Gadget interrupted herself suddenly, “Not that I’m interested in starting a romance with him or anything, you got him all to yourself, as far as I know”.
Tammy chuckled; Gadget hadn’t really gotten the hang of dealing with people yet, and often didn’t realize when she’s stumbled onto a sensitive subject until it’s too late.
“he’s the cutest guy ever”, Tammy said, “but he thinks I’m just a little kid, and I’m not!”
“He didn’t mean to be so harsh on you”, Gadget said, “He’s just naturally kind grumpy like that. But being a Rescue Ranger is dangerous work. He only cares about your safety, y’know?”
“But I kicked butt back there!”, Tammy said proudly, “did you see how quickly I made the rope, it saved our lives!”, Tammy was illustrating her knot-tying skills with a few wild gestures and slumped back into the seat, “it felt great, I felt like a… like a…” she was reaching for a good word.
“A hero?” Gadget suggested, “Yeah, you think Chip is brave for saving your life? You saved his life, and your sisters, and Dale’s and Monty’s…”, she paused, “and me, you saved my life.”
“I did? Yes I did!”.
The night was cold, but Tammy’s smile made Gadget feel all warm inside. She was wrong before, the sense of glory after a completed adventure was not what made her glad to be a ranger. It was moments like this, when you realize you’ve made one person’s life a little better, that really made her glad to be a Rescue Ranger.
The Rangerplane made its way through the nighttime sky, and soon they where back home at the Rescue Rangers Headquarters.
It was now that uncomfortable time right before morning where it is not only way too late, it is also way too early. But no one, except for Binky, really felt like sleeping. Monty made some hot chocolate to everyone as they discussed the nights adventure.
“I can’t believe you guys got Chipper to wear a dress”, Tammy said, “how did you do that?”
“When he realized you were in danger, he didn’t hesitate for a second!” Monty said.
“Yeah, take a look at your knight in shiny cocktail dress!” Dale added with a grin.
“I took one for the team!”, chip said defensively, “and at least I didn’t enjoy it as much as you seemed to do.”
“Hey, I KNOW I’m beautiful!” Dale said with a joking wink.
Tammy and Gadget couldn’t help but laugh at the boys. The conversation went on for about an hour, but eventually, it became even too late for Dale, the seasoned night owl, and the others went to bed.
“You should go to bed”, Gadget said, “I’m going to go work in my workshop, the plunger shoes could use some adjustments, and I should get to it before I forget about it.”
“yeah, tomorrow, I’m gonna have to go home…”, Tammy looked down at her cup, “will I ever see you again?”
“Of course, as long as we’re not on a mission, you’re welcome here whenever you want. You really don’t want to say goodbye to Chipper, don’t you?”
“No, Tammy said, I just really don’t want to say goodbye to you…”
All too often you meet people that might be really interesting and you trade phone numbers and you swear that you will contact them, but you never do. Nine times out of ten, you never bother to call or visit them again. For some reason it just doesn’t feel right. You where linked by some common experience and when that experience passed, you didn’t really have anything that brought you together anymore. It’s those rare one out of ten times when weird and wonderful things might happen.
Barely a day had gone past after the Rangers adventure in babysitting when Tammy appeared again on their doorstep with a sunny smile and a box full of homemade cookies.
The news of the sudden appearance of cookies swept through the headquarters like wildfire and soon everyone was standing in an eager half circle around Tammy.
“Oh boy, cookies!”, did you make them?”, Dale asked.
“yes”, said Tammy, I thought you guys deserved something for saving me twice.”
“That’s a a bonza good idea!”, Monterey said, “what kind of cookies is it?”
“Hazelnut- and cheese cookies, my grandmother’s recipe.”
Monty got a look on his face like a starved dog seeing a bone.
“psst, Tammy”, Gadget said, “DUCK!”
The muscles inside Monterey’s body kicked into position by some basal instinct. He became a panther, ready to leap, and Tammy was momentarily paralyzed as he came charging towards her like an Australian cannonball. Dale and Chip shielded their ears in anticipation; there was a large “THUD!” and everything was chaos. We’ll never know why so much dust gets kicked up in frantic situations like these, but it has probably to do with Dale’s housekeeping-habit. As the dust cleared, Tammy found herself sitting in Gadgets lap on the floor as the Australian bowling ball wolfed down the cookies at an alarming rate.
“Well, I hope you brought a second box”, Dale said with disappointment as the last crumble disappeared into Monty’s mouth.
“I’m sorry, I should’ve known this would happen”, Tammy said.
“It’s my fault Tammy, so let me bake you some cookies in return, Monterey’s special!”
“Just clean up after yourself this time!”, Chip yelled at him as he disappeared into the kitchen, “and TRY not to wreck another pressure cooker.”
Gadget and Tammy began the slow awkward process of disentangling themselves. In the confusion, Tammys leg had ended up under Gadgets leg, while Tammy herself was on top of Gadget. After a bit of negotiation they where standing face to face blushing a bit.
“Do you wanna come to my workshop and see the improvements I made on the suction cup shoes? We better get out of our way before Monty blows up the kitchen”
“sure”, Tammy said and they both went into the workshop as a tsunami-wave of dough and flour flooded the kitchen.
The suction shoes really worked great. As she walked, they disengaged from the ceiling with a liquid, almost completely silent “plop”. The world didn’t look remarkably different upside down, but it felt different. IT felt like she where suddenly growing, or about to ascend with every step she took. If Gadget had asked her to try one of her inventions a few days before, Tammy probably wouldn’t have dared to do it.
“Its going great!” Gadget exclaimed, “Doesn’t it feel just like walking on the ground?”
“On the moon, maybe”, Tammy said, “they are kind of hard to control”
“Perhaps I need to adjust the internal gyroscope”, Gadget said, “Come over here and I’ll help you down”
Tammy clumsily walked towards Gadget and put her arms around her neck. Whether it was by design or by accident, they ended up face to face, Tammy still upside down, hugging Gadget close. This sudden close contact brought a shiver trough Gadgets body, and a feeling that was hard to decipher. Tammy was smiling the smile of a close friend; it was hard to believe that just a few days earlier, she would’ve looked on Gadget with a hateful glare rather than a friendly gaze. Gadget was avoiding Tammy’s eyes, but put her hand gently on top of Tammy’s hand.
“I got a question for you”, Gadget asked, “Do you remember what you said to Chip about me a few days ago?”
“you mean ‘she’s okay if you like that sort of person?’”
“Do you?”, Gadget asked, “I mean, like that sort of person?”
Tammy didn’t speak, but answered the question with a kiss.
