Kimberlian, Celestial Drake of Haat'Tar by
Some info:
Path to ascension may not be linear and Celestial Drake status aren't permanent. Kimberlian learned that hard way, but did that experience changed her? Not exactly, just made more cautious and less overconfident.
In her mortal life Kimberlian, early known as 'Kim', was hatched as Irrokka (native lizards of planet Haat) in the lands of Golden Dawn tribe. Yet her future was predicted to be rather grim. Her egg was a trophy in conflict of Golden Dawn and Serrated Claw tribes. Originating from Serrated Claw and knowing nothing about them, Kim still got ostracized. Kim was always limited in anything imaginable, from food and clothes to learning and meaningful tasks. As she grown up, over and over again Kim was needed to prove her loyalty to Golden Dawn tribe, her usefulness and dedication to order. Golden Dawn tribe actively tried to get rid of her, first by assigning to be a forager and sending to dangerous regions. When Kim survived, she got delegated to tribe's warriors as helper, carrying supplies and munitions, putting her in possible combat situations without any training or weapons. Despite all, Kim survived, slowly getting experience and ambitions, will overcome any challenge thrown at her, bend laws, walk around rules and traditions, prevail where others perish. Kim's fate was decided, tribe finally found a 'perfect' job for her - assigning to Moon temple as priestess. Golden Dawn worshiped Haat's sun and Sol, Celestial Dragon of the Sun associated with it. For Kim, being assigned to Moon temple was meaning getting out of favour from most of the tribe, spending all the time in windy temple on the mountain top, isolated from the world, having just few visitors during full moon. Kim got mostly one ritual per month and rest of the time she was bored, after a year she learned everything from dusty tomes and scrolls found in Moon temple. Her only friend was Karum - another Irrokka, a temple guard. Kim's and Karum's story would end up in Moon temple... with nothing left but their names written on the wall, yet unexpected happened.
One day, priesthood of Golden Dawn accepted offer of unknown benefactor, promising a voyage to Sanctuary Shard, a floating continent suspended in the void above Haat. Still ostracized, Kim wasn't invited, instead her presence was requested at departure ceremony. Kim almost cried seeing happy faces of priests and especially High Priestess, clearly mocking her, as Kim kneeled before Sol's temple and humbly waited for the end of ceremony. A magnificent being, Celestial Dragon arrived and took Golden Dawn priesthood away. Kim got some suspicion, as Celestial Dragon didn't look like Sol, Luna or Noctua, while she didn't remember teachings mentioning any other aside the three. But it was too late to argue, and her warning won't be accepted, so Kim kept silence.
Tribe got worried, as High priestess gone missing, having no word from her, tribe prayed to Sol and Elion, God of Light and Creation. In two months, horrible truth arrived, delivered by angelic sentinel - High Priestess and her court won't return, as they never reached Sanctuary Shard... and no Celestial Dragons, at least genuine of them ever offered the invitation. Someone else took them, someone powerful enough to actually impersonate Celestial Dragons. Golden Dawn tribe was in panic state, their faith and leadership compromised. Kim and Karum stepped in, as Kim remained the only legal priestess of Golden Dawn. Kim made first sermon for the Irrokka commoners, slowly and gently restoring faith and taking the leadership. She took new name 'Kimberlian' (Kim Berry Liana) and declared herself a new High Priestess of Golden Dawn. Despite Karum brining ceremonial weapon just in case, order was restored without an accidents or casualties. For few years Kimberlian worked hard to rebuild the priesthood and lead Golden Dawn tribe.
Kimberlian established contact with Sol, Celestial Dragon of the Sun and they spoke about Sanctuary Shard and mysterious disappearance. Explaining that she needs to defend herself and the tribe, Kimberlian got a gift, a glimpse of Sol's powers. Finally tasting the power, Kimberlian wanted more, her ambitions begun to grow exponentially, just like her demands. Eventually Sol grew tired and offered a quest for her, a monumental task of searching for artifacts of bygone era. Depending on what Kimberlian could find, Sol offered to grant her a citizenship in Sanctuary Shard or even something more valuable.
Kimberlian and Karum walked a long and perilous path, a pilgrimage across Haat, searching for any historical places, abandoned temples, forgotten shrines and ruins. During her quest, Kimberlian found an injured silver dragoness - Noee and saved her. Noe's past was clouded, she claimed to be ostracized just as Kimberlian once was. Uneasy partnership was settled, Kimberlian and Karum using Noe's help for transportation around Haat, in return Noee asked for share of treasures, she was clearly allured to gold. To get more information about long lost events and potential locations to search, Kimberlian hired another Irrokka, a nomad named Dwang. Dwang rummaged and raided temples to get any useful information for ambitious priestess. Eventually Kimberlian got a hint, where 'Hidden Temple' is located, a legend from era of Kaida's rule, even from before Elion's time. Problem was simple - 'Hidden Temple' was unreachable. Entrance was once located at the seashore, leading to shaft with stairway descending inside the rock, stretching deep several kilometres below the surface. But as Elion, God of Light and Creation, lifted the continent into the void, creating Sanctuary Shard, 'Hidden Temple' got flooded by the Hollow Sea. Sol offered little support, constantly doubting the idea, Dwang went missing, Noee becoming impatient. Even determining precise location took decades, all that time Kimberlian prepared for a ritual that would allow the trio to descend into the depths and return unharmed.
Key ingredient for the upcoming ritual was feathers from angelic sentinels, with proper enchantments, they could grant resemblance of protective aura, providing mortal beings a meaning to withstand pressure of the depth. Other components included protection from cold and means to breath underwater for short period of time. After meeting with Sol again, feathers were provided. Armed with set of enchantments, light spheres and protective aura, trio begun their descent. It took several hours to reach ruins of 'Hidden Temple' and find a way inside. Surprisingly it wasn't entirely flooded, not just air pockets present, but some corridors and chambers almost untouched by the water as if some magic was repelling it. The 'Hidden Temple' was filled with a lot of skeletal remains of its past inhabitants, most of them was preserved badly, while time and salt water in flooded sections completely destroyed any traces of remains. Kimberlian kept herself rather optimistic, Karum was worried, Noee got strangely agitated, despite hauling any sizeable riches to the surface was almost impossible. With time as key factor, trio navigated a maze of collapsed and flooded tunnels, trying to avoid traps. As exploration continued, trio arrived at the chamber where sacred relics was held. For Kimberlian it was revelation, not single, but two relics stored inside the 'Hidden Temple' - a Silver Wreath of Power and the Black Pearl, both could grant artificial demigodhood. Kimberlian and Noee studied symbols on the chamber's walls and pedestals, looking for warning or hidden mechanisms, last thing they needed is collapsing entire temple on their heads. Kimberlian used her knowledge, part of it gained by Dwang's services, but Noee strangely recognized and was able to translate the symbols. Silver Wreath was meant to be used only by Celestial Dragon, like Kaida once was. But the Black Pearl got less restrictive requirements, it only needed to be tethered between horns to activate. Kimberlian and Karum tried to reason with Noee, who already put her eye on the Black Pearl. But as Noee touched it... something unexpected occurred, a pedestal resonated, revealing the truth. Noe's form shifting, her silver scales fading to onyx black, her appearance turning to what she really was, a demonic being. Kimberlian and Karum stood before Noee in all her predatory grace, demon dragoness, one of the seven deadly sins, Princess of Pride.
What happened next, was the most horrible and tragic battle, that Kimberlian ever knew. She used everything she got, including gifted Sol's powers. Yet, Kimberlian and Karum was only mortals, facing a Demon Princess. Their only salvation from demise was Noe's ambition to take them alive. Was it some twisted form of friendship or deep feelings that Noee developed during their shared quest. But Kimberlian faced a moral dilemma, submitting to Noee to save her life at the cost of her faith and becoming Noe's pawn... or risk it all in desperate gambit. Kimberlian pleaded Noee to let Karum escape, offering herself in exchange for his life, pointing how important his safety is. Noee got her attention diverted, thinking that she is in control, keeping Karum pinned down under her paw and using his as bargaining chip, discussing terms of Kimberlian's servitude. Kimberlian asked that if Noee allow Karum to live and return to the surface, she will allow herself to be corrupted willingly. Noee not being a fool and considering a chance that Kimberlian could call for Sol or other Celestial Dragon, insisted that ritual of corruption into demonhood must be held here and now, right in the 'Hidden Temple'. Kimberlian agreed, claiming that she loves Karum and will do anything to guarantee his safety, at this moment Karum got tensed, suspecting something not being right. As ritual was about to commence, Noee stood inside the rune circle, offering Kimberlian a chalice of her own demonic blood. That was a point of no return, consuming Noe's blood would seal Kimberlian's fate. As Noee was distracted by preparing the ritual, Kimberlian got audacity to actually steal both the Silver Wreath and the Black Pearl, replacing relics with illusions. Instead of accepting a chalice, she made a radiant blast, collapsing the chamber, sealing both Noee and Karum inside. Lies and betrayal wasn't exclusive only to demons, some sly priestess can do that too.
After reaching the surface, Kimberlian took a great care to hide the Black Pearl, considering using it later for her own purposes, especially understanding possibility of revenge from Noee. Then she contacted Sol and reported that mission was successful. By offering the Silver Wreath to Celestial Dragon, she got triumphal arrival to Sanctuary Shard, becoming legal citizen and receiving great gift - runes with meaning 'health' and 'ageless' inscribed on her forehead. Kimberlain fabricated a tragic story that Karum and Noee perished because of deadly traps. She wanted ascension, mentioning spending decades traveling with disguised demon Princess could jeopardize Kimberlian's efforts to become a Celestial being. Leaving Karum behind to his doom wasn't the cleanest act too, even if she saved both relics from demon's clutches. Kimberlian hid details about the mission, but no one really questioned her about it, she was a hero, mortal that returned sacred relic. Yet, something gnawed at her, she needed to know, what happened back at 'Hidden Temple', she needed to repeat the ritual and return there to determine Karum's and Noe's fate. And for that Kimberlian needed key ingredient - feathers of angelic sentinels.
As new Celestial Dragon arrived at Sanctuary Shard, Reeva - newly ascended Celestial Dragon of the Storm, Kimberlian took the chance. Reeva clearly having some grudge with Elion, steamrolled the path right into his palace, leaving a trail of destruction behind, even defeating Sol and Luna. In chaos Kimberlian used her knowledge of alchemy to mix healing and sleeping potions, offering them to unsuspecting injured angelic sentinels, just to steal a few feathers, as they drift asleep. Unfortunately for Kimbeliran, she acted in haste without proper planning, this time she failed, being discovered and captured. With Shard's Council busy with aftershock of Reeva's assault and destruction of Elion's avatar in the throne room, hearing Kimberlian's case got postponed. Surprising them both, she ended in the same cage with Dwang, an Irrokka nomad that she once hired to search for knowledge. They hid their connection and Kimberlian kept silent about real reasons for trying to steal the feathers. She claimed that wanted to have more power, to gain freedom of visiting Haat on her terms.
Kimberlian was lucky, spending years as prisoner, being alive and relatively safe, at least from Noe's revenge. Council was dealing with problem of Reeva's demise by Elion's greater self... turning into her return. Reeva resurrected and somehow changed, claiming arriving to 'Tyrant's path' instead of Endless Lines of Souls. Reeva turned into headache for both Elion and Council, cast down from being Celestial Dragon into mere mortal, exiled to Haat... yet stirring the world. Eventually words reached Kimberlian, that war broke out between Golden Dawn and Serrated Claw tribes, full scale confrontation, where Sol's temple was destroyed, clearly with Reeva's involvement. Being stuck in the prison, powerless to do anything, Kimberlian was forced to wait. Reeva managed to defeat Sol, to bring down a Celestial Dragon while being mortal and triumphally returned to Sanctuary Shard, Elion restoring her Celestial Powers on condition that Reeva will serve the order. Yet, Tar-Ra, an Irrokka warrior from Serrated Claw that helped Reeva was found responsible for Sol's temple destructions and stirring the war. Soon Kimberlian, Dwang and Tar-Ra stood before Reeva as their judge.
Dwang managed to bargain a chance to take penance, becoming a legal 'sinner'. Tar-Ra got spared after failed execution, Reeva jolted him with lightning hard enough to render being disabled, unable to walk at all. Seeing that Reeva to emotional turmoil because Tar-Ra and their connection, Kimberlian managed to bargain herself a chance to be judged not by Reeva, but by Sol. Kimberlian faced Sol's wrath, harsh treatment, endless trials and torments, yet Sol's goal wasn't to destroy her, rather to break her. Having vast experience and knowing how to be convincing, Kimberlian managed to overcome all the hardships. Eventually she has shown loyalty to Sol and desperate hunger for knowledge, becoming not just 'sinner' on the penance, but Sol's apprentice. With Sol's help, Kimberlian eventually ascended, becoming a Celestial Drake.
For few years she kept confident, completing the training, learning the laws of Sanctuary Shard and completing the tasks for the purpose of keeping balance. No longer fearing Noee, Kimberlian relaxed, trying to bury her past and live new life from the scratch. She even visited Dwang in the library of Elion's palace, guiding him to eventual ascension. Kimberlian tried to show her better side, she spoke with Tar-Ra, confined to wheelchair and Reeva's tower. Disabled Irrokka warrior became lifetime prisoner, a bit honoured, but still mostly alive because Reeva's pity. As Kimberlian complete her training, she was invited to Elion's palace to audience with God of Light and Creation. As she got her white skull mask... Elion accused Kimberlian in betrayal of Karum, hiring Dwang to steal the knowledge, dealing with demons to usurp the leadership in Golden Dawn tribe, hiding facts about her past and most importantly - hiding the Black Pearl for personal use. On her knees, Kimberlian cried, all her hope for better future was just obliterated. She pleaded to explain herself, to tell the true story. Elion agreed to listen, but of all the charges only dealing with demons and usurping leadership was discarded. Kimberlian had no idea that Noee pretended to be Celestial Dragon, leading High priestess and her court to their doom, never to be seen again. Under Sol's guard, Kimberlian delivered the Black Pearl to Elion. Her confession and return of the relic, as well as her deeds before in securing the Silver Wreath, was deemed enough to save her from execution. Yet, her celestial status was revoked, Kimberlain was cast down, powers and immortality drained from her, becoming a Fallen Celestial. Ashamed and ostracized again, she was exiled to Haat, her path took almost complete circle...
