That also begs the question of why the gods deserve to be worshiped, if their interference in mortal affairs unleashes existential catastrophes.

If anything, it sounds like mortals would be much better off without their presence.

In the lore of this series? Probably because they are holding back a more celestial based threat.

IRL though... I sort of agree.

That was the big reveal of one of the Shadowrun games. Despite the fact that dragons were perceived as being a massive threat to mankind, who needed to be exterminated for the safety of all, they were actually holding back a far more dangerous threat of cosmic proportions at bay. When the dragons went extinct, this threat was able to surface and bring about the end of humanity.

aka there is going to be fallout that you can't even comprehend if I explain to you in any meaningful way if we help. We are not happy about this also.

Both sides have a point. Either the gods are omnipotent and uninterested, or they are limited in power and dealing with greater threats to existence (i.e., not gods). Unfortunately, extraordinary claims beg extraordinary proof and the gods either can't or won't provide. Either way, it might be best to exhibit some restraint and not antagonize potential powerful allies.
