Well, in both the anime and manga of Naruto, there are two series, the first one known as Part I or pre-Shippuden, and the Part II or Naruto Shippuden, separated by a time skip of about two years. The Shippuden version is the character design after the time skip in the Naruto series (he was 13-14 in part one and in the Shippuden series he was 16-17).
