Yo.
Here is a sketch for an idea on the bunker gear coat.
I'll try to fix up the reflective-tape lines at the bottom trim of the coat--they look too "busy" there. It kinda hurts my eyes.
=============================================
Some critique:
-I like the overall size of the coat. It makes him look bigger (yay). I might want to make it a bit longer, though. Because it doesn't *quite* make it past the belt, it causes a whole mess of lines that make it look too busy to me.
-Genuinely surprised that the elbow pads look good. I was worried that it would be hard to draw them deformed so strongly at the bent elbows, but it all turned out ok. :)
-I hate his hand on his side. :(
I (really) don't want to redraw the hand entirely nor in a different pose. Again, my intention for this art piece is to draw Joseph (and Brody) in layers to, well, layer their outfits. Changing something like a pose ruins the consistency. :(
It just doesn't look right to me with his coat on because it doesn't look like his thumb is being tucked correctly in perspective. :(
-He has a flashlight and nifty pen holder.
...
:)
-I might want to give him gloves at this point. It could actually help with the "hand problem." Plus, it is necessary while wearing the full gear like this.
(...granted, in character, Joseph is such a badass that he doesn't wear gloves while rescuing people even while wearing his coat lol. Gotta show off those rad Arcanine claws.)
-I really did try to copy over his symbol and name to the coat. It didn't work because past me is an idiot and put it on the color layer. I tried to copy it with many different kinds of color selections and stuff, but it kept having absolutely horrible pixelation and junk. :( :( :(
I am afraid of (re)drawing it because it won't be exact anymore. :(
To make myself feel a bit better at it, having any symbol like that isn't standard on the chest area. It was a cool symbol, though. :(
-While the coat itself is cool, I might want to just bite the bullet and give him his SCBA gear (AKA the air tank, etc.) at this point. I'm not sure, though. I might want to do the coat as a layer and then add the SCBA on top. Not sure if I want him to have his helmet on. I'm also not sure if I want him to have his mask on in another layer.
...
Sorry. I am a bit puzzled as to how I want to continue with this. :/
Can't you tell that I am unsure of this overall? :(
=============================================
...
Like, bruh, I haven't even started on Brody yet. This sucks. I think that "projects" like this frustrate me because I "have" to draw, like, 5 different images for the different clothing options and configurations. Jokes on me; I make things harder for myself.
...
Alright, I'm ending on a more positive note.
I do enjoy Joseph here overall.
He's
Hurricane128 's character, of course, but I get to add my own style to him. I don't have Hurricane's style, but that's okay! We can't all draw the same; that would be boring.
I do like how I have been handling the layers so far in this project. I've been using SAI for...gosh...a decade now? I know about layers and stuff (obviously), but making sure that I am keeping up a consistent outlook on this project makes me feel like I am competent--like I can do relatively complex things. Not going to lie, though, it is, again, a lot of work to draw the same character multiple times! I haven't even gotten to a proper background because I am wading through the labor of finishing the characters first (aNd I hAvEn'T eVEn gOttEn to BroDY UGGGGHHH).
Ok. Positive statements.
I like his bunker gear pants. :)
I am actually quite proud of them. They do look padded and over-sized just like how they are in real life. That makes me happy.
This is in Scraps because it is just a WIP post.
