"I know for one idea, I absolutely could see Balans writing or enjoying a coffee at Poom Cafe. I could see him drinking a coffee and relaxing like spread out relaxing to show the size off around his friends. I do love the idea of writing in a coffee shop you know, or the implications of it" - Balans, talking commission ideas with Poom, September 4th, 2022
Allow me to mock myself for how long it takes me to commission art. I first met Poom on November 9th, 2019. It wasn't until two years and two days later (November 11th, 2021) that I figured out that I wanted to commission him. I didn't have an idea of what I wanted! That wouldn't come until the above quote was written on September 4th, 2022, so almost another year before I even told an artist what I'd want for a $200 commission. By then, and throughout the next year and a half of time, my pickiness over how it would come out mixed with us both getting on with adult lives cost even more time.
Yet I'd do it all over again. For in that stretch of almost five years now, we've gotten to know each other. We learned a lot about ourselves, grown as people, and became better together. My indecisiveness dragged out a singular commission yet I would say in a heart beat that Poom - who now goes by Don it's been that long - is one of the best ever. He's one of the closest friends I have, one of the best artists I know, and easily someone who I'd love to see more of in the world. So strong that he lifts the world's struggles. So caring that he starts with yours first. As productive as coffee makes the soul. As sweet as the creamer poured into the coffee cup. All of it wrapped up in a beautiful, glittering, string lights bow of wholesome and cozy like a nighttime coffee shop.
I began five years ago just struggling to formulate an idea for a commission. Five years later, I come out with a commission that's worth more than both of our big himbo gain's worth of weight in gold. It's an artwork that symbolizes everything about us both, and through which I'd love to see in the world too. Poom, now Don, thank you for being one of the best studs ever in my life. Here's to many more stories, artworks, and shared evenings with coffee to come. Especially ones where I don't take two years to figure out how to flex in a commission haha! <3
