In the Romanesque themed story I'm brewing around in my head, I've mentioned that Three's love interest is a wolf that is a retired general who has gone into politics.
Since Three (called Silver in this world) had no status or proof of citizenship she could either work as a low wage laborer or try her hand in the arena. The arena paid better and she had enough fighting skills that she decided to try there. In this particular world a female gladiator is unusual but not unheard of, so she's a novelty of sorts. Usually women fighters are used for introductory fights and intermissions while the men battle the really impressive duels, but she literally beat her way into the main events and started getting attention.
One of the people who noticed her was Barius. He tended to flirt with the opening act fighter women and tried it on Three as well. She was the first woman to rebuff his numerous advances and that made him want her even more. For a woman with no social standing to turn down the chance to be a mistress of a well to do senator was intriguing to him, and he began to court her with enthusiasm for quite awhile until she finally relented somewhat. The two slowly became feuding friends and eventually lovers.
In this scene Barius is making a pass at Three and she's ignoring him while she waits for her chance in the ring. No doubt Barius bribed one of the folks in charge to make sure she was placed in waiting near his seat.
At this point in her career as a fighter Three has gotten attention but isn't a major attraction or all that known yet, so she's dressed fairly plainly. As she grew in notoriety her armor and uniforms grew more bright and lavish, to the point that the arena master would stick her in clothing to try and enhance her shape, although she drew the line at fighting in a corset. There were rumors for a time that she was really a man and it was all a gimmick, but (much to Three's chagrin) that never stopped Barius' advances and flirting.
The gladiator combat itself is actually not as lethal as it sounds. The weapons are blunted and combat between two consenting fighters ends when the other is disabled as opposed to killed. Lethal combat and weapons are reserved for wild beasts that are set loose for gladiators to fight and convicted criminals sentenced to death who want a chance to fight for their freedom and their lives. Gladiators are not forced to fight in the lethal combat battles, although the ones that do are paid well and have a much better chance at making a name for themselves.

So Barius is a bit of a scoundrel in addition to a senator and former general. That certainly makes me a bit more of a well-rounded character. There has to be more to him, though. I can see Three starting to like the guy due to the regular exchanges of flirting and sharp-tongued banter, but now I'm curious as to what made Three start to love him. Well, I'll find out eventually as more is revealed. I'm guessing that this would be a good example of a "rivalmance" type of relationship, at least at first.
Well, the shortest answer is that he stopped treating her like someone that would add a notch to his bedpost and got really curious about what kind of person, in a society where status is better than gold, would rebuff him so casually. Plus as a former soldier he actually enjoyed watching her fight since she used methods he'd never seen before. Barius gained his status because he's an excellent tactician, and even if he isn't a soldier anymore he still like to study and plan and plot and understand the situations and people around him.
I can imagine that their conversations would be focused on that and him trying to find out the details of how and where she learned to fight. You can see her getting evasive for obvious reasons, and him growing all the more fascinated in the little mystery of her. Eventually he got so focused on that, that even sleeping with her was forgotten. And the more he learned the less he saw her as just another bed warmer and someone he wanted to take a lot more seriously.

A better term would probably be 'ageless'. She doesn't age, but she can be killed. Stab her through the heart, shoot her in the head or cause some other massive lethal trauma to her and she'll be just as dead as anybody. She does heal quickly though and is immune to a lot of poisons, toxins, and illnesses so she's not that easy to kill either.
Three's personality shifts in little ways as she ages and travels along, sometimes she's a lot more mercenary about killing and sometimes she's very reluctant about it, although she's always had a core belief against killing helpless innocents. This storyline takes place pre-conversion to Christianity and little bits of it will probably reflect that.
And yes, Barius is an opportunist. I think he was positive Three was a female despite what people were saying, but it was more than she kept turning him down that made her really attractive to him. When you can have anything you want, all too often the thing you want the most is what you can't have.

Yeah, desire burns strong in all of us. Sadly, too many take one of two paths the world offers, and both are dead ends. Either become a hedonist and be blown about by the winds of chance and addiction... or kill the desire and thus your heart, becoming a dispassionate mystic who won't lift a finger to help others. Pretty sure Barius is the former, least from how you describe him.
Me, I believe in the third path, the only Way that leads to true, abundant life.
"Delight in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart."
