A fantastic sketch colored commission for
Night-Forager. One of my first drawings of a Caitian, and my very first drawing of a Gorn (that just made me appreciate more these scaly space puppies - with all respect someone with cuteness overload can give ofc). Thank you so much 🐈⬛🦎

ID: A colored digital sketch of two characters, a black Caitian (a cat-like alien species) and a green Gorn (a lizard-like alien species). The Caitian wears command Picard-era jacket Starfleet uniform, a phaser rifle, and a science tricorder. The Gorn also carries a phaser rifle, but wears the colorful typical Gorn tunic. They are both walking in a rocky landscape, some smoke around, and look worried and a bit weared down. End ID.

After only having been exposed to the Gorn through that one silly fight scene,
I really appreciate you putting that character in more dignified situation,
and rendering them so finely! Those scales are exquisit!
And congratulations on your first Caitian! The character looks gorgeous
with that dusky dark fur and the coffee highlights!
Your cat face anatomy is stellar!

To be honest I LOVE the silly fight! Maybe because I watched too many tokusatsu series in my childhood - Jiraya, Jaspion, Changeman, Kamen Rider... these were imensely popular in Brazil, i have no idea why. To the point of National Kid being popular here and not elsewhere, even Japan. I just started Ultraman and I'm in love with it!
So the Gorn for me is the biggest symbol of the enduring friendship of Trek and tokusatsu fans. I even imagine how, and if, these series influenced each other.
But, yeah, it is nice to make a Gorn outsite the original silliness. These scales are from the Star Trek Online game - I don't play it, but
Night-Forager was kind enough to provide a lot of references. Credits to him for Jrrhasa design and color scheme too!
Thanks for the comment, one more time 💖

Thank you for presenting this genre with all its notable titles!
Tokusatsu also includes the kaiju movies, and saw the original Godzilla way back as a kid,
but I'd missed all the brightly costumed shows that would come to the Western media as Power Rangers.
Looked up the Gorn models from the game, they are pretty buff and intimidating, unsurprisingly!
There were also some Gorn in Lower Decks, too!

HOW COULD I FORGET GODZILLA? The 1954 film is art. Period. I love it.
Power Rangers is fantastic too! Have you ever watched the original japanese episodes? I found some. It's amazing! And I need to mention how Machiko Soga was brillinat as Rita Repulsa.
OMG and the Lower Decks design for the Gorn is lovely! I particularly appreciate how the solved the eyes, and the coloring of the cells is the chef's kiss.

Loved those faceted gemstone eyes, yeah!
Never watched Power Rangers, sadly, but I've watched some reviews,
and I recognize who Rita Repulsa is without looking her up!
Her costume was a riot and a revolution, very memorable.
Those shows were the peak of over the top theatrics!
Everyone involved seemed like they were
having so much fun making those
shows...

I watched Power Rangers during childhood, it was very popular here! But only came to fully appreciate Rita Repulsa during a recent rewatch. And it was also very recently that I realized the series is a patchwork of Super Sentai for the villains and fights, and cheesy American new footage for more trivial scenes. It resulted in many funny situations, like the Yellow Ranger being a guy on fighting footage (nice that no one cared), and Machiko Soga redubbing herself for changes in the text - yeah, the American version was shown in Japan!
THE SONG WHAT. Spasiba bol'shoye for sharting this it is... it is... I have no words. The echoes and the beats make it some kinda very soft turbo folk. Turbo folk for kids, if that's possible. LOVE it!
I'm not familiar with Voltron, but by the opening it surely drinks from tokusatsu and kaiju tropes!

So happy that you've enjoyed the song! It's so over the top and cheesy, but also quite charming!
I also thought that even Sailor Moon kind of follows the same pattern,
with color-coded uniforms, and space/trans-dimensional menaces!
It's a long and rich theatrical tradition!

Never heard of the show until you mentioned it,
but now that I've sampled it, it seems very much
like Sailor Moon, except with lots of
handsome young men characters!
I like the constellation- and Greek pantheon-based theming
for the characters, too! And there are hints of Christian
mythology and culture in there, with all those evil Popes!
The outfits, though! The outfits and armors are fabulous in that show!

Saint Seiya was cheesy and glorious, and along Dragon Ball one of the most popular animes here. And obviously I had sorta crush on Andromeda Shun and Cygnus Hyoga! By the way, the first Russian word I learned to read was "da svidanya" (melancholical, huh?), because some Hyoga comics I found (online).
And, yeah, the designs were fabulous! I remember I drew them A LOT, and even found a Phoenix Ikki in some recent review of my folders and drawers :D

The scope of your knowledge is truly awe-inspiring!
The first foreign animated series I watched in the freshly post-Soviet era
were the U.S. Saturday morning cartoons (TMNT, Duck Tails, Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, etc.),
as well as the original My Little Pony cartoons, the original USAmerican Transformers series,
and the Japanese Transformers series ("Victory" and "Masterforce" – they had amazing OSTs!).
Sailor Moon appeared a little later, and I originally dismissed it as being "too girly",
and only discovered it's many virtues later in life... and now I'm at point in life
when watching shows with little girl protagonists is uncomfortable
because of the vast generation gap.
Thank you for sharing your formative animation experiences! ✨✨🐀✨✨

"The scope of your knowledge is truly awe-inspiring!" why, thank you :D. I'm just a curious rodent :D
"watching shows with little girl protagonists is uncomfortable

I thank you too for sharing your childhood animations! Some were similar, some were not, but this is what I love in this world ✨✨🦭✨✨

Bluey is hyper wholesome, the very definition of family friendly, made for parents and kids alike!
Meanwhile, there are some dark cultural connotations with all-schoolgirl-cast anime shows,
thanks to all the imageboard trolls obsessing over those characters
and fueling the borderline criminal NSFW art production
involving them.
There's also some gender-based difference of perception for older people watching
shows with very young characters: a woman who is a fan of such a show
can be viewed with benign endearment, and her interest is interpreted
as maternal sentimentality, but an older man watching the same show
would usually be seen as a suspicious creep.
This is not to say that I an deterred by that social perception –
I mostly can't connect with young characters in general.
I get it that high school is the bustling nexus
of ambition, emotion and social genesis,
but I prefer to watch shows
with older characters
talking about things
that I can relate to – you know, like middle-aged Starfleet officers
debating the applicability of the Prime Directive.
Besides the shows from the old, old animated shows I mentioned,
I've also had a period of watching lots of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon cartoons
(Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Ren and Stimpy Show, Angry Beavers, Rocko's Modern Life),
and later in life, I also watched some of the more young adult-oriented animated series,
(Invader Zim, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Venture Bros, BoJack Horseman, MLP: Friendship is Magic).
I've also watched a good number of anime series, from Trigun to Fullmetal Alchemist to Evangelion.
In retrospect, it is scary how much of those shows I've watched,
and how much they must have affected my values and tastes growing up.

Ah, gotcha what you said about magic girls, and some way-less-than-wholesome-fandoms. And about identification too; I have no problem watching children's media, but there is always something I relate, at least the design.
Of these mentioned, I have the best memories of Rocco's Modern Life, and even the first Sponge Bob seasons + the movies.
"[...]and how much they must have affected my values and tastes growing up" - sometimes it's scary, but in many ways it can be endearing. Revisiting some old media I'm realizing many things about myself; some I grew up from/need to grow up still, but others are good values and even major influences in my art. It's sorta therapeutic.
