An idle thought struck me at work a few months ago, and I couldn't let go until I came up with these two. Meet June and August Sunders! Two perfectly normal, perfectly charming, perfectly devious raccoons that are never up to anything dubious! Ever!
...Okay, that's not entirely true, obviously. These two are phantom thieves, always scoping out their next job together. They've been at this a while, and they've amassed quite the collection of treasures and trinkets, but there's one white whale they still covet. The one that got away. The one that made them who and what they are today.
In their early years as a thief, June and August were just June. Or August, depending on the day. Just an ordinary, one-headed, bigender bandit. One fateful mission put a magical artifact in their sights, and their careful plans went off without a hitch. Right up until their prize was actually in their hands, and did its thing. In a flash, June/August was completely disoriented, their head splitting into two. With the mission compromised and their cover blown, the thief—now thieves—had to leave their prize behind, learning quickly to work together to make their escape.
Acclimating to their new condition wasn't nearly as difficult as they were expecting. The magic had effectively duplicated their mind across their two heads, so coexistence came naturally to them—what better partner in crime is there than yourself, after all? The biggest difference between the two is their gender, with June (the blue-headed one on their right) being a butch woman and August (the red-headed one on their left) being, for lack of a better word, a femboy. (The outfit they're in here is August's; they take turns deciding what they wear.)
Ultimately, they find that they're more effective as thieves now than they were before the accident. They still want to find the artifact that cursed them, of course, but not to turn them back. They want it as a symbol; a reminder of the job that turned them into real professionals. Unfortunately, leads have grown scarce since that bungled job, but that won't stop them from helping themselves to all the other spoils that beckon to them in the meantime.
Other fun facts:
- June and August exclusively refer to themselves in the first-person. Even when they're talking to or about each other. It's very confusing, but that's just the way they like it.
- Their fur and hair colors change subtly to match their surroundings, like a chameleon. Sometimes, they even change to match the company they're with. I have a few alt palettes matching my other characters, if anyone wants to see them.
- They're part-tanuki and are pretty talented with magic. They can shapeshift into different arrangements, turn items into leaves for easy storage, and do some basic illusion tricks. Can't change the number of heads they've got, but it's not like they'd want to anyway.
